IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Respected sir,
I am writting this letter to complain about disturbance i have been facing since few days because of loud noises played by my neighbour.
I usually face it when i come home from work in the evening. I hear loud musical noises, and it continues till night and i am not able to feel calm at my own place because of it.
As i am preparing for my exam i can not focus on my studies due to this. I am not able to sleep on time because of it. It is affecting my daily life and i simply cannot tolerate this. I have told her few times to keep volume low, but she is not taking it seriously that is why i have to write this complain to you.
I need you to take action against it and stop this as early as possible. Thank you for your consideration.
Kind Regards,
Mansi Pansuriya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student attempts to address the purpose of writing a complaint letter to a housing authority or manager about a noisy neighbour. However, the task lacks a formal greeting suited to a professional complaint letter, starting instead with "Respected sir," which is overly colloquial and outdated. The tone is somewhat inconsistent, oscillating between a personal grievance and a formal complaint. While the key points such as the timing of the noise, the impact on sleep and studying, and previous attempts to resolve the issue are mentioned, they are somewhat underdeveloped. The letter meets the minimum length requirement, but the lack of proper context and audience awareness prevents it from reaching a higher band. It adequately communicates the core message, placing it comfortably in the band 6 category.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas, moving from the problem description to the impact on the writer's life, and finally to the requested action. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, such as the timing of the disturbance and the consequences on studies and sleep. However, cohesive devices are somewhat basic and repetitive, relying heavily on "because of it" and "due to this." Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, such as the pronoun use in "that is why i have to write this complain to you." Despite these mechanical cohesive issues, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow, making this a solid performance for band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their frustration clearly. However, the range is quite limited and repetitive, with words like "noise," "disturbances," and "few" appearing frequently. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling "writting" with a double 't' and misspelling "complain" instead of the noun "complaint" in "write this complain." Collocations are sometimes unnatural, as seen in "played by my neighbour" instead of "coming from my neighbour." While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message without impeding the reader's understanding, the presence of spelling errors and a lack of less common lexical items restrict the score to a band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as "As i am preparing for my exam i can not focus on my studies due to this." However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several punctuation and capitalization errors, notably the failure to capitalize the pronoun "I" throughout the text ("i am writting," "i usually face it"). Articles are missing in places, such as "since few days" (should be "for a few days") and "keep volume low" (should be "keep the volume low"). Complex structures tend to be prone to errors. Nevertheless, the meaning remains clear despite these frequent minor errors, warranting a band 5.5.
