IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to file a formal complaint regarding the flat I rented out from your accommodation agency on 20th August this year.

Even though I highly appreciate the smooth service you provided, I wanted to express my disappointment about the next door person who also rents through from your company. He plays very loud video games late at night since the day I moved. I kindly requested him to lower the noise few times. He informed me that he has the freedom to play loud video games, anytime of the day, which is not acceptable.

I am doing a job every weekday from 8 am to 8 pm and I need my sleep uninterrupted. Since the same incident is happening every night, it will have a negative effect to my mental peace and work productivity.

Hence, I kindly request you to inquire this and give a proper warning to my neighbour regarding this or provide me another comfortable flat in the same building.

I am looking forward to your response as soon as possible. If you need any further details, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Vishmi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully completes all the requirements of the formal complaint letter. The purpose of the correspondence is clear from the opening paragraph, and the tone is appropriately polite yet firm. The situation is adequately described, detailing the specific problem with the neighbour playing loud video games and the negative impact this has on the writer's work and rest. Furthermore, a clear request for action is made in the fourth paragraph, proposing two viable solutions. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to a general correspondence task. Overall, the response covers all parts of the prompt effectively and maintains an appropriate semi-formal/formal register suitable for an accommodation agency complaint.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: establishing the context and purpose, detailing the problem, explaining the personal impact, requesting specific actions, and providing a polite closing. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as transitions like 'Even though', 'Since', and 'Hence', which guide the reader smoothly through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each main point housed in its own well-defined paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the narrative from the initial complaint to the requested resolution.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint. Phrases such as 'formal complaint', 'accommodation agency', 'uninterrupted', and 'work productivity' show a good grasp of functional language. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies and slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'rented out from your accommodation agency' (instead of 'rented through') and 'the next door person' (instead of 'my next-door neighbour'). Additionally, 'request him to lower the noise few times' lacks an article before 'few times'. Despite these minor flaws, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the precise meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses like 'Even though I highly appreciate the smooth service...' and 'If you need any further details...'. There are several grammatical errors present, such as preposition misuse ('rented out from', 'effect to my mental peace' instead of 'effect on'), missing articles ('lower the noise a few times'), and awkward phrasing ('I am doing a job every weekday'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. The punctuation is generally accurate, and control over sentence boundaries is maintained.
