IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Sidhu,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to show my interest for the position of someone to look after your house in Scotland when you will be far away.

My full name is Loveleen. I did my higher studies from homecare schools and afterthat I worked their as a part-time home care taker. I have experience in this field from around 2 years.

I have some suitable qualities for this job. I am well organiser and my schedule is flexible. I am living in this area from last 3 years. Thus, I think my qualities are appropriate for this job. I would try to give my best for taking care of your house.

To proceed further, could you pleaselet me know about exact location of your house, duration for this job and also the main responsibilties that I will have to fulfill in your absence.

I will wait for a positive feedback from your side.

Yours Sincerely,

Loveleen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the key requirements of the letter. The purpose of writing is clear from the beginning, as Loveleen expresses interest in looking after Mr Sidhu's house in Scotland. Relevant information regarding her background, qualifications, and schedule is provided, and appropriate questions are asked about the location, duration, and responsibilities. The tone is polite and semi-formal, fitting the requirements of a personal-to-professional inquiry. Although the development of ideas is slightly basic in places, all parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, showing a clear purpose and position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, starting with a suitable salutation and opening statement, followed by body paragraphs addressing background, personal qualities, and questions, and ending with a standard sign-off. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Thus' and 'To proceed further', though some transitions are a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as moving from past experience to current qualities and then to further enquiries. Overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, such as 'flexible', 'part-time', and 'responsibilities'. However, there are notable limitations and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'homecare schools' instead of care training centres, 'worked their' instead of 'there', and 'for taking care of' where 'after' or 'caring for' would be more natural. Some phrases are overly simplistic, but communication is not impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('when you will be far away', 'could you please let me know'). However, there are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including tense issues ('when you will be far away' instead of 'when you are away', 'I am living in this area from last 3 years' instead of 'have been living... for the last 3 years') and missing articles or prepositions ('worked their as', 'positive feedback from your side'). These errors occasionally cause strain, though meaning remains generally clear.
