IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mena,
How've you been? I hope you are doing well. It feels like ages since we last caught up. I have some good news for you. Guess what? I have recently started a new job of physiotherapy in my city last week, and I'm honestly having the time of my life. My role is to assess patients' physical conditions and provide them with effective treatments. There are a few experienced physiotherapist , who are approachable and supportive.
I decided to work as a physiotherapist for several reasons. I wanted to broaden my horizon by understanding different conditions and their underlying causes. In addition, this position will unable me to achieve a greater sense of satisfaction when I'll help patient recover from their injuries.
By the way, can you please let me know when you are coming to visit my workplace? You can pop over to my working place in the evening when there is few patients, so I can explain you everything in detail. Afterwards, we can grab a bite and catch up on the all gossip.
Fingers crossed you're free! Drop me a line and let me know.
Take care,
Miral Khunt

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter effectively covers all the requirements of the prompt by greeting the friend, sharing the good news about the new physiotherapy job, explaining the reasons for choosing this career path, and inviting the friend to visit the workplace. The tone is appropriately friendly, natural, and consistent with an informal letter to an acquaintance. Ideas are well-developed and extended appropriately throughout the text, such as detailing the specific role of assessing patients and the desire to broaden professional horizons. There are no missing elements or irrelevant details, and the purpose of communication is fully achieved. Therefore, this performance aligns closely with the Band 8 descriptor for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear and logical organisation from the opening greeting down to the closing sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with distinct sections for the opening and sharing of news, the explanation of job motivations, and the invitation to visit. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'By the way', and 'Afterwards' are managed well to guide the reader smoothly through the text. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in linking clauses could enhance fluidity even further. Overall, the structural progression satisfies the criteria for Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, such as 'physiotherapy', 'assess patients', 'underlying causes', and 'sense of satisfaction'. There are some successful attempts at less common phrasing like 'broaden my horizon' (though idiomatically 'horizons' is plural) and 'grab a bite'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies or minor awkwardness in word choice, such as 'working place' instead of 'workplace', 'few patients' instead of 'fewer patients', and 'all gossip' instead of 'all the gossip'. These minor slips do not impede communication, placing the performance securely in Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing includes a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors, such as 'started a new job of physiotherapy' (unnecessary prepositional phrasing), 'physiotherapist ,' (unnecessary comma and missing plural/article agreement), 'this position will unable me' (incorrect verb form of 'enable'), and 'when I'll help patient recover' (unnecessary future tense in a dependent time clause and missing plural 'patients'). Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.
