IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mona,

How've you been? I hope you are doing well. It has been ages since we last caught up. I'm writing to ask if you could do me a favour because I am planning to move to Toronto to look for a job as a physiotherapist. Simultaneously, I might take a advanced physiotherapy course there to gain my professional knowledge.

I am particularly concerned about the accommodation as I have never been to there before. In addition to this, I am a little worried about how to find a job in the healthcare centers in this city. Since I lack knowledge about this city, it causes me considerable stress.

By the way, can you please let me know whether I should live in the heart of the city or on the outskirts of Toronto? And, if you were in my shoes, what would you do? I'd really appreciate your invaluable advice.

Drop me a line and let me know what you think. I'll return the favour whenever you need me.

Take care,

Miral Khunt

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by adopting the appropriate semi-formal tone to greet a friend, explain the reason for writing regarding moving to Toronto, and asking for specific advice about accommodation and job opportunities. The purpose of the correspondence is clear from the outset, and the writer includes relevant details about pursuing a career and further studies as a physiotherapist. Ideas are adequately extended with supporting questions about living in the city centre versus the outskirts. The tone is polite and friendly, perfectly suited to a general training task. Although some points could be slightly more elaborated, the overall coverage meets the requirements of a Band 7 performance, as all functional aspects of the prompt are clearly fulfilled.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is coherent and easy to follow, featuring a clear logical progression from the opening pleasantries to the main request for help and the closing remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the introduction and reasons for moving in the first paragraph, followed by the specific concerns regarding accommodation and employment in the second. Cohesive devices are handled reasonably well, using transitional phrases like 'In addition to this' and 'By the way'. However, referencing has minor issues, such as the redundant preposition in 'been to there before'. Overall organisation demonstrates a clear and logical structure that fits the requirements of a Band 7 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally sufficient for the task and allows some flexibility and precision, with domain-specific terms like 'physiotherapist' and 'healthcare centers'. The writer successfully attempts less common vocabulary such as 'considerable stress' and 'invaluable advice'. There are, however, a few minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take a advanced physiotherapy course' (where 'an' is needed) and the awkward phrasing 'to gain my professional knowledge', which would be more naturally expressed as 'to expand my professional knowledge'. Despite these minor lexical slips, communication is never impeded, and the range is adequate for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, leaning solidly toward a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over conditional structures ('if you were in my shoes, what would you do?') and relative clauses. There are several error-free sentences, particularly in the opening and closing sections. However, a few grammatical errors persist throughout the text, including the article error 'take a advanced physiotherapy course' and the superfluous preposition in 'been to there before'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and these minor errors rarely impede communication, allowing the writer to comfortably secure a Band 7.0 for grammatical control and range.
