IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mitesh,

How've you been? I hope you are doing well. It has been ages since we last spoke. I've got some exiting news for you. Guess what? I recently moved to your city. You know, I live in a rented apartment, which is located on the outskirts of the city. I am particularly pleased with the atmosphere in my neighborhood because it is cheerful and enchanting.

I really appreciate the public transportation because of its frequency and affordability. In addition. I particularly like the weather, which allows me to take a long walk in the evenings. However, I have a strong aversion with public places because they are always crowded and noisy.

Anyway, when are you coming to catch up with me? As you enjoy parties, lets organize a small celebration to celebrate your birthday at my home next weekend. Afterwards, we can grab a bite and catch up on all the gossip.

Fingers crossed you're free! Drop me a line and let me know what you think.

Take care,

Miral Khunt

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response effectively covers all parts of the letter to a friend. The purpose of writing, which is to share the news about moving to a new city, is clearly communicated. You successfully described your new neighborhood, mentioning both positive aspects like the cheerful atmosphere and public transportation, as well as drawbacks such as crowded public places. Furthermore, you addressed the second bullet point by inviting Mitesh to celebrate his birthday at your home next weekend. The tone is appropriately friendly, informal, and consistent throughout the task. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a clear purpose and satisfying all the requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The letter is logically sequenced and easy to follow. Ideas flow smoothly from the opening greetings and personal news to the description of the neighborhood and finally the invitation for the birthday celebration. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct theme or purpose. Cohesive devices are handled well, using transition words and phrases such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Anyway' to connect ideas naturally. Referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring that the reader can easily track who and what is being discussed. The overall structure contributes to a coherent and natural reading experience suitable for personal correspondence.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary for this task. There are good lexical choices and collocation attempts, such as 'rented apartment', 'outskirts of the city', 'cheerful and enchanting', and 'strong aversion'. However, there is a minor spelling slip ('exiting' instead of 'exciting') and an awkward preposition usage ('aversion with' instead of 'aversion to'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey precise meaning and maintain the reader's interest. Less common lexical items are used with some awareness of style, fitting the informal yet descriptive nature of a friendly letter very well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully employ relative clauses ('which is located on the outskirts', 'which allows me to take a long walk') and conditional or time-dependent structures ('when are you coming to catch up with me?'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are only a few minor mechanical issues, such as a stray full stop instead of a comma ('In addition. I particularly like...'), but this does not impede communication or obscure the meaning of your sentences. Overall, you demonstrate good grammatical control and flexibility.
