IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hello xyz,

I am writing this letter to express my concerns about the loud noise from video games being played by people next door, who have rented a flat from your agency.

Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that I needed a flat in a quiet area, as I am preparing for my exams. I do not have any complaints about the flat, but my neighbours they plays video games till late at night with higher volume, which causses me many problems.

In the first week, they were quiet, but after that they started to play loud music, and nowadays they play video games at a higher volume.

I am not able to concentrate properly and do not have enough sleep as well. I am afraid that lack of sleep can cause me health issues as well.

As they have rented a flat from the same agency, I would appreciate it if you can just inform them about the situation and request them to keep the volume lower, specially during nights.

Thank you so much for your cooperation and understanding of my situation.

Kind regards,

xyz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter clearly covers all parts of the task. The purpose is stated right at the beginning, expressing concern about the loud video game noise coming from the agency's tenants next door. The context (that you previously informed the agency about needing a quiet area for exams) is well integrated, and the desired outcome—asking the agency to talk to the tenants about keeping the volume down, especially at night—is explicitly requested. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter to a letting agency. Ideas are fully relevant and supported with appropriate details, such as the impact on sleep and concentration. There are no major omissions, and the response fulfills all the requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical progression and organisation throughout. It starts with an appropriate salutation, clearly states the purpose in the opening paragraph, develops the issue across the body paragraphs, and concludes politely before signing off. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct points, such as background information, the specific problem, and the requested action. Cohesive devices are used adequately, though there is a minor instance of awkward referencing in the sentence 'my neighbours they plays video games', where the pronoun 'they' is redundantly attached to the subject. Overall, however, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, successfully guiding the reader through the complaint.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating the problem using standard phrases such as 'express my concerns', 'concentrate properly', and 'cooperation and understanding'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, like 'concentrate properly' and 'health issues'. However, there are a few word choice and collocation issues, such as 'with higher volume' (instead of 'at a high volume') and 'causses' (spelling error). Despite these minor lexical inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly without impeding the reader's understanding, fitting comfortably into the band 6 descriptor range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinating conjunctions and conditional-like structures effectively (e.g., 'Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that...'). However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('my neighbours they plays') and spelling/morphology errors ('causses me many problems'). Punctuation is generally fine, and these errors do not impede overall communication. The presence of these recurrent minor errors alongside a mix of structures places this response firmly in the band 6 category for grammatical range and accuracy.
