IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hello xyz,

I am writing this letter to express my concerns about the loud noise from video games being played by people next door, who have rented a flat from your agency.

Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that I needed a flat in a quiet area, as I am preparing for my exams. I have no complaints about the flat, but my neighbours play video games late at night at a high volume, which causes me many problems.

In the first week, they were quiet, but after that they started to play loud music, and nowadays they play video games at a higher volume.

Because of this, I am not able to concentrate properly and do not get enough sleep as well. I am afraid that lack of sleep can cause me health issues as well.

As they have rented a flat from the same agency, I would appreciate it if you can just inform them about the situation and request them to keep the volume lower, especially at nights.

Thank you so much for your cooperation and understanding of my situation.

Kind regards,

xyz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response effectively covers all required elements of the letter. The purpose of writing is immediately clear in the opening sentence, where you explain the issue regarding the loud video games played by the neighbours. You successfully reference your prior discussion with the agency about needing a quiet area for your exams, providing necessary context. Furthermore, you clearly state the negative impacts on your concentration and sleep, and conclude with a polite, direct request for the agency to intervene. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint to a letting agency. Your ideas are well-developed and fulfil all communication purposes required for a general training task of this nature, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised logically with a clear progression from the initial statement of the problem to background context, personal consequences, and finally a proposed solution. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas, such as grouping the consequences on sleep and health together. Cohesive devices like 'In the first week', 'after that', and 'Because of this' are used effectively to guide the reader through the sequence of events and cause-and-effect relationships. While referencing is mostly clear, a minor improvement in linking sentences could enhance the overall flow. Overall, the structural arrangement demonstrates clear logical organisation and earns a strong band score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint. Phrases such as 'express my concerns', 'concentrate properly', and 'cooperation and understanding' are used accurately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat standard and occasionally repetitive, such as the repeated use of the word 'flat' and 'volume'. There are a few attempts at slightly less common phrasing, but overall the lexical range lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout, ensuring that communication is never hindered by lexical limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully employ subordinate clauses, such as 'Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that I needed a flat in a quiet area, as I am preparing for my exams.' Grammatical control is generally quite good, with many error-free sentences. Minor issues appear, such as the slightly awkward phrasing 'and do not get enough sleep as well' where 'as well' is redundant given the earlier 'causes me many problems', but this does not impede communication. Punctuation and tense usage are handled reliably throughout the letter.
