IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Hello xyz,
I am writing this letter to express my concerns about the loud noise from video games being played by people next door, who have rented a flat from your agency.
Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that I needed a flat in a quiet area, as I am preparing for my exams, and you assured me that it would not be an issue. I do not have any complaints about the flat, but my neighbours are a bit noisy, which causes me many problems.
Ever since they moved in, they started to make noise with loud music and high volume on the TV, etc. Nowadays, they play video games at a higher volume. Because of this, I am not able to concentrate properly, and I am well behind my study schedule. I am not getting enough sleep as well. I am afraid that lack of sleep can cause me health issues as well.
As they have rented a flat from the same agency, I would appreciate it if you can just inform them about the situation and request them to keep the volume lower, especially at night. I really hope you understand the situation and help me with it.
Thank you so much for your cooperation.
Kind regards,
xyz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter clearly covers all requirements of the task. The purpose of writing is immediately established in the opening paragraph, where you express your concerns about the loud noise from video games played by the neighbours. You successfully remind the letting agency of your prior conversation regarding your need for a quiet study environment ('Before renting a flat, I had already informed you...'). Furthermore, you clearly state the negative impacts this noise is having on your exam preparation and sleep quality, and you finish by making a polite and direct request for action from the agency. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint to a letting agency, and all ideas are relevant and well-developed. This performance aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the problem, the second paragraph details previous agreements, the third elaborates on the current consequences of the noise, and the final paragraph outlines the desired action. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are handled adequately, using linking words and phrases such as 'Before renting a flat', 'Ever since they moved in', and 'Because of this' to connect ideas smoothly. While some referencing could be slightly more polished, the overall progression is clear and easy to follow, making this a solid Band 7 performance.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and allows you to communicate your message with reasonable precision. You use appropriate phrases such as 'express my concerns', 'concentrate properly', and 'cooperation'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary ('study schedule', 'concentrate properly'), though much of the language remains fairly standard and functional. Word choices are generally accurate, and occasional conversational phrasing like 'a bit noisy' or 'just inform them' fits the semi-formal/formal nature of a tenant-agency letter without impeding communication. Spelling and word formation are entirely accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully (e.g., 'who have rented a flat from your agency', 'As they have rented a flat from the same agency, I would appreciate it if you can just inform them...'). The majority of sentences are grammatically sound and punctuation is used correctly. There are a few minor instances of phrasing that could be more polished, but these do not impede communication or strain the reader. The control of grammar is consistent throughout the response, securing a comfortable Band 7.
