IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Hello xyz,
I am writing this letter to express my concerns about the loud noise from video games being played by the people next door, who have rented a flat from your agency.
Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that I needed a flat in a quiet area, as I am preparing for my exams, and you assured me that it would not be an issue. I do not have any complaints about the flat, but my neighbours are a bit noisy, which causes me many problems.
Ever since they moved in, they have started to make noise with loud music and high volume on the TV, and other things. Nowadays, they play video games at a higher volume. Because of this, I am not able to concentrate properly, and I am well behind in my studies. I am not getting enough sleep either. I am afraid that a lack of sleep can cause me health issues as well.
As they have rented a flat from the same agency, I would appreciate it if you can just inform them about the situation and request them to keep the volume lower, especially at night. I really hope you understand the situation and help me with it.
Thank you so much for your cooperation.
Kind regards,
xyz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response fully covers all parts of the task by clearly explaining the purpose of the letter, reminding the agency of previous conversations regarding the need for a quiet area, detailing the current noise issue with the neighbours playing video games, and suggesting a practical solution. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal complaint to a letting agency. The student successfully establishes a clear position and purpose throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring that the reader understands both the context and the required action. According to the band descriptors, this response effectively satisfies all the requirements of Task Achievement at a high level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. The layout follows standard semi-formal letter conventions, opening with an appropriate salutation and closing with a polite sign-off. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the initial complaint to the background context, specific examples of disturbance, and finally the requested action. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the background agreement and the current noise issue. Cohesive devices are managed well, using referencing and conjunctions like 'Ever since' and 'Because of this' naturally and effectively to connect ideas without being overly mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'express my concerns', 'concentrate properly', and 'cooperation' are used appropriately. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary items such as 'concentrate properly' and 'health issues'. While much of the vocabulary is standard and functional rather than exceptionally sophisticated, it is precise enough to convey the message clearly. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate, and occasional simpler expressions do not impede communication. Spelling and word formation are correct throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that I needed a flat in a quiet area, as I am preparing for my exams...' There is good control over grammar and punctuation, with many error-free sentences. Complex structures are attempted and managed with reasonable accuracy, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('I would appreciate it if you can just inform them...'). While there is a slight slip in tense consistency in the request ('if you can just inform' rather than 'could'), grammatical errors are rare and do not impede understanding at all, demonstrating solid control.
