IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Hello xyz,
I am writing this letter to express my concerns about the loud noise from video games being played by the people next door, who have rented a flat from your agency.
Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that I needed a flat in a quiet area, as I am preparing for my exams, and you assured me that it would not be an issue. I do not have any complaints about the flat, but my neighbours are a bit noisy, which causes me many problems.
Ever since they moved in, they started making noise with loud music, having the TV on high volume, and among other things. Nowadays, they play video games at a higher volume. Because of this, I am not able to concentrate properly, and I am falling behind in my studies. I am not getting enough sleep either. I am afraid that a lack of sleep can cause me health problems as well.
As they have rented a flat from the same agency, I would appreciate it if you can just inform them about the situation and request them to keep the volume lower, especially at night. I really hope you understand the situation and help me with it.
Thank you so much for your cooperation.
Kind regards,
xyz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task by clearly explaining the purpose of the letter, detailing the specific noise issue caused by the neighbours, reminding the recipient of previous communications regarding the need for a quiet environment, and outlining a clear request for action. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal complaint to a letting agency. The student successfully maintains a consistent purpose throughout the letter, covering the issue comprehensively and developing the ideas well, such as explaining the impact on their studies and sleep. There are no omissions in addressing the prompt requirements, and the purpose is clearly communicated from beginning to end.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The letter is logically sequenced, with each paragraph serving a distinct and clear purpose in the progression of the complaint. The introduction sets the context, the body paragraphs explain the background and the current problem, and the final paragraph provides a polite call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately and effectively. Cohesive devices are handled well, such as 'Before renting a flat', 'Ever since they moved in', and 'Because of this', ensuring smooth transitions between ideas. Referencing is clear throughout, making the letter easy to follow and ensuring that information and ideas are arranged coherently from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally natural range of vocabulary for this type of task. Phrases like 'express my concerns', 'concentrate properly', and 'cooperation' are used accurately. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, such as 'falling behind in my studies' and 'adequate preparation'. While the vocabulary is largely standard rather than advanced, it is precise enough to convey the meaning clearly without impeding communication. Word choice is appropriate for a complaint letter, and spelling is entirely accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Before renting a flat, I had already informed you that I needed a flat in a quiet area...' and 'As they have rented a flat from the same agency, I would appreciate it if you can just inform them...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong. There are only very minor stylistic choices, such as the informal inclusion of 'just' in 'if you can just inform them', but this does not detract significantly from the overall control. Punctuation and verb tenses are managed accurately throughout.
