IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
t is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older. Do you agree or disagree?
I completely agree that people change their habits and opinions as they grow older. This change is natural and happens to almost everyone.
The main reason for this is life experience. When people are young, their opinions are often based on what their parents or teachers tell them. They have limited knowledge of the world. As they become older, they meet new people, start working, and face difficult situations. These experiences teach them new lessons and make them rethink their old views. For example, a young person might believe that money is the most important thing in life. However, after working for many years and making friends and family, they may realize that health and relationships are more valuable.
Another reason is the change in responsibilities. A teenager's habits are very different from an adult's habits. A young person may have the habit of sleeping late, playing video games all day, and spending money without thinking. But when the same person gets married and has children, their habits must change. They have to wake up early, save money, and live a more disciplined life. I have seen this in my own family. My elder brother was very careless as a student, but after becoming a father, he became very responsible and organized.
In conclusion, changing with age is a sign of maturity and personal growth. As responsibilities increase and knowledge grows, it is inevitable that our habits and opinions will also change.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses the prompt by clearly agreeing that people change habits and opinions over time. A strong, consistent position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as contrasting a young person's view on money with an adult's perspective, and discussing lifestyle changes after marriage. The body paragraphs effectively explore distinct aspects of the prompt—life experience and changing responsibilities. The arguments are logical, cohesive, and directly related to the central thesis. While the prompt resembles an Academic Task 2 essay format rather than a General Training Task 1 letter, the response fully satisfies the requirements of a discursive essay by exploring the topic with sufficient depth, clarity, and extended reasoning, meeting all criteria for a strong performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with a clear introductory stance followed by well-structured body paragraphs that explore specific reasons using signposting language such as 'The main reason for this is' and 'Another reason is'. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments, such as 'For example', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used logically and appropriately to separate the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. There are no notable flaws in referencing or cohesion, ensuring that the relationships between ideas remain transparent and easy to follow from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision in discussing personal growth and maturity. Phrases such as 'life experience', 'limited knowledge of the world', 'personal growth', and 'disciplined life' demonstrate an appropriate command of language for this topic. There are also successful attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'inevitable', 'responsibilities', and 'careless'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate, and spelling is correct throughout the text. Although there is limited use of advanced, sophisticated lexical items that would characterise a higher band, the vocabulary deployed is fully adequate to convey precise meaning without any strain on the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with frequent error-free sentences. The student effectively utilises subordinate clauses and complex structures, such as in 'When people are young, their opinions are often based on what their parents or teachers tell them' and 'As they become older, they meet new people, start working, and face difficult situations.' Grammatical control is generally strong, with correct tense usage and punctuation throughout the text. While minor slips or repetitive sentence openings occasionally occur, they do not impede communication or obscure the writer's meaning. The overall grammatical structure is secure and demonstrates reliable control over standard English sentence patterns.
