Band 6.5 IELTS Writing Task 1 Model Answer

IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older. I agree with this statement because people gain more experience and their responsibilities and priorities change throughout life.
Firstly, people often change their habits because their lifestyle becomes different as they grow older. For example, young people may spend a lot of time playing games, using social media or going out with friends. However, when they become adults, they may have jobs, families and other responsibilities. As a result, they usually develop more practical habits, such as waking up early, managing their money and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Therefore, age and responsibilities can have a strong influence on people's daily routines.
Secondly, people's opinions can also change because they gain new experiences and knowledge. A person may have a particular opinion about education, work or relationships when they are young, but their views can become different after experiencing real-life situations. For instance, a young person may believe that earning a high salary is the most important part of having a successful career. However, after gaining work experience, they may realise that job satisfaction, a healthy work-life balance and opportunities for personal development are also important.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Although the prompt provided by the student was blank, the writing clearly responds to a standard prompt about whether people change their habits and opinions as they get older. The student takes a clear position in the introduction ("I agree with this statement because people gain more experience...") and sustains this throughout the response. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as contrasting the habits of young people playing games with adults managing careers and families, and how views on salary shift toward work-life balance. The response meets all the positive descriptors for Band 7, as it addresses all parts of the task with a clear position and well-extended ideas, avoiding over-generalisation through precise examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, introduced effectively with sequential markers such as "Firstly" and "Secondly". Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments, as seen in expressions like "As a result" and "However". Paragraphing is managed sufficiently, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs logically. Referencing is clear and easy to follow, with pronouns and demonstratives referring accurately to preceding nouns. While some transitions are somewhat standard rather than sophisticated, the overall arrangement is coherent and meets the Band 7 descriptors thoroughly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student displays a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision. Phrases such as "practical habits", "real-life situations", and "work-life balance" demonstrate an ability to use less common items with good awareness of collocation. Word choice is generally appropriate for discussing lifestyle and personal development. There are occasional attempts at more complex lexical items, and spelling throughout the text is accurate. While the vocabulary is not fully sophisticated or wide enough to reach Band 8, it comfortably satisfies the criteria for Band 7, providing clear and precise communication without noticeable lexical strain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The student uses a good variety of complex structures alongside simple forms, displaying frequent error-free sentences. Examples of complex structures include conditional or concessive elements such as "when they become adults, they may have jobs..." and "after gaining work experience, they may realise that...". Control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong, with subordinate clauses correctly punctuated and verb tenses consistently maintained. Errors are very rare, meaning that the majority of sentences are grammatically accurate. This level of control and structural variety clearly aligns with the Band 7 descriptors.
