IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Simmon,

I am writing to you regarding my current issue of accomodation in main city Lahor. I have shifted from my hometown to Lahore since last month. Initially, I asked my uncle to accommodate me at his home, so that I would be able join my university classes from there without any delay. The main reason of shifting in Lahore is, I have joined a course offered by The University of Lahore during summer break. They are offering an internship which will give me exposure of hands-on skills and different expertise.

I was searching for this sort of an opportunity since long. Now it is a pretty good opportunity that I want to secure. The internship program is just three months long starting from 1st July and will end by 30th September. I want to request you, to help me in finding a flat on rent. I am ready to pay extra fee, if you find the one near the university.

It will be a huge favour. I am waiting for your prompt response.

Yours Sincerely

Areeba

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, establishing a clear purpose for writing to Simmon and maintaining an appropriate semi-formal tone throughout. You clearly explain why you are writing, detailing your current housing issue in Lahore, your university course, and the internship opportunity. You also state your specific request for help in finding a rental flat and your willingness to pay extra. Your main ideas are extended and supported, such as explaining that you moved to stay closer to university classes and that the internship lasts from July to September. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or provide minor unnecessary details, which places the development at this level. To reach higher bands, ensure every detail directly supports the core purpose of the letter without slight digressions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You successfully introduce the purpose of your message right at the beginning ('I am writing to you regarding my current issue...') and follow a natural narrative flow from your background situation to your specific request for assistance. Paragraphing is handled appropriately, separating the context of your move from your actual request and sign-off. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Initially', 'Now', and 'The main reason', which help guide the reader through your explanation. However, referencing and cohesive links are occasionally a bit basic or slightly mechanical, such as repeating 'opportunity', which prevents the flow from feeling entirely seamless. To improve further, integrate a wider variety of advanced cohesive transitions to connect ideas even more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message to the reader. You demonstrate an attempt to use less common items and appropriate phrases related to your situation, such as 'summer break', 'hands-on skills', and 'prompt response'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and spelling errors that reflect this level. For instance, 'accomodation' contains a spelling error, 'main city Lahor' has a spelling error in the city name and awkward phrasing, and phrases like 'issue of accomodation' or 'reason of shifting' could be expressed more naturally. Furthermore, you use 'since long' instead of 'for a long time'. These occasional inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band of precision and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'so that I would be able join my university classes' and 'if you find the one near the university'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. For example, there is a missing particle in 'able join' (should be 'able to join'), an awkward comma placement in 'The main reason of shifting in Lahore is, I have joined', and a preposition error in 'shifting in Lahore' (usually 'shifting to Lahore'). Additionally, 'flat on rent' is slightly unnatural compared to 'rental flat'. Punctuation and verb tenses are generally handled well enough to ensure the meaning remains clear, featuring a mix of error-free sentences alongside these minor persistent mistakes.
