IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Rohan,

I hope you are doing well. It seems like ages since we last spoke , so I thought I would drop you a line to tell you about my new job in Toronto. I finally got the job I told you about and I moved here a few weeks ago.

The new job us going really well so far. I'm working for a furniture store as a sales coordinator, Althogh the first few days were quite hectic , I'm gradually getting used to the workload and my colleagues. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming , which has made setting in much easier.

I have also found an appartment which is not far from my workplace. However it is smaller than older one , but it is modern, bright and surprisingly comfortable. There is a large park quite near and i have alreday started going there in the evening to unwind after work.

You should really come and visit when you get a chamce. you could stay with me , and I will take yiu around the city. We could explore some of the neighbourhoods, try a few local restaurants and perhaps spend a day at Niagra Falls if you are here for a weekend.

Let me know when you are free. I am really looking forward to see you and catching up properly.

Take care

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the communicative purpose, adopting an appropriate informal tone suitable for writing to a friend. You clearly convey the purpose of your message by explaining your new job in Toronto as a sales coordinator, describing your living arrangements, and extending a warm invitation to visit. Your ideas are well-supported with relevant details, such as mentioning the furniture store, the nearby park, and potential activities like visiting Niagara Falls. However, the response sits at this level rather than a higher one because certain ideas, such as the details about your new apartment, are somewhat generalized and could be further extended with more vivid descriptions or background context to achieve full and seamless development across all points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You successfully use paragraphs to separate distinct topics, moving smoothly from the greeting and introduction of your new job in the first paragraph, to your workplace experience and accommodation in the middle sections, and finally to your invitation and sign-off. Cohesive devices are employed effectively, such as 'However', 'There is a large park quite near and i have alreday started...', and 'You should really come and visit...'. While referencing is generally clear, there are minor lapses in mechanical cohesion, such as spacing around punctuation marks and transitional flow, which prevents the structure from achieving the absolute seamlessness and flexibility required for the highest band levels.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common and functional items such as 'sales coordinator', 'hectic', 'gradually', and 'unwind'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that place your response at this band. For instance, 'Althogh' is misspelled, 'setting in' is used instead of 'settling in', and phrases like 'smaller than older one' lack a necessary noun or possessive pronoun (e.g., 'my older one'). Additionally, typos like 'appartment' and 'alreday' indicate occasional inaccuracies in spelling and mechanics. To reach a higher band, you need a wider and more flexible control of less common vocabulary with fewer mechanical slips in word formation and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as 'Althogh the first few days were quite hectic, I'm gradually getting used to the workload...' and '...if you are here for a weekend.' You achieve frequent error-free sentences and good management of punctuation in places. Nevertheless, a few grammatical and mechanical errors persist, such as typing 'us going' instead of 'is going', missing capitalisation at the start of sentences like 'you could stay with me...', and minor punctuation spacing slips before commas. Because these errors, alongside lowercase usage on pronouns ('i have alreday started'), prevent a dominant majority of error-free complex structures, the writing sits comfortably within this band.
