IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir/madam,
I am writing this letter in repose to your request from the library users to come up and give their opinions on how to improve the library facilities and also recommend which services be made available to everyone and which ones only to the special members.
First of all, I would like to thank you for giving your members the chance to give their opinions and feedback. Furthermore, I would like to add that the facilities provide are state of the art but one problem that I usually face is the unavailability of certain books. Either those books are high in demand or they have very few copies available within the facility.
I am attaching a list of books that i am always interested in reading and most of the time i am not able to get them issued.
Overall, this library facility is the state of the art building but there should be some changes in timings for the specific groups to visit and read. For example, school students should only be allowed on weekdays and only before 3 p.m so that university students and students doing resaerch can have their study time in peace and solace without the hustle and bustle of young resarchers.
Thanking in anticipation
Warm regards,
XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all parts of the task by responding to the library's request for opinions and facilities improvement. Your position is clear throughout, and you successfully cover both general facilities and specific membership access rules. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, while your suggestion about restricting school hours to weekdays before 3 p.m. is well explained and extended, your point about book unavailability is only partially developed. You mention that books are high in demand or have few copies, but you could have extended this by suggesting solutions, such as acquiring digital copies or increasing duplicate purchases. Overall, you provide a relevant and appropriate response for the prompt, touching upon all necessary bullet points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. You use standard letter-writing conventions, opening with 'Dear sir/madam' and closing with 'Warm regards'. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'First of all', 'Furthermore', and 'For example', though at times the referencing and transitions can feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate your introduction, feedback on book availability, recommendations on timings, and conclusion. To move towards a higher band, you could ensure smoother transitions between your points, particularly when shifting from your book list attachment to your overall thoughts on building design.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'state of the art', 'unavailability', and 'peace and solace'. There are some word choice and spelling errors that do not impede communication, such as writing 'repose' instead of 'response' in your opening sentence, lowercase 'i' instead of 'I', and spelling 'research' as 'resaerch' later in the text. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but these minor slips and occasional inaccuracies in word form prevent you from reaching a higher band. Focusing on precision and proofreading will help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as 'For example, school students should only be allowed on weekdays and only before 3 p.m so that university students... can have their study time...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('give their opinions on how to improve library facilities'), a preposition error ('in repose to' instead of 'in response to'), and missing punctuation around clauses. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your arguments easily.
