IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I am writing this letter, to communicate an issue of loud video games, played by my neighbor late at night. Also the tenant has a lease agreement with your agency and I request you to address this issue promptly as its affecting my sleep schedule and peace

The problem started from last week, when has shift hours changed from morning to evening. I think he has recently bought a new play station 5 on black Friday sales as he was talking to me about purchasing one during that time. Initially the noise was for a brief period during the evening but it has extended in the last couple of days, I had spoken to him about how the noise and his response is coming to my unit but he has turned a deaf ear towards the same

I work from home and I have a UK based client, I have to start early to facilitate my work hours and have a habit of sleeping early around 9pm. Due to this nuisance, I am not able to go to bed around my regular time and often my sleep is interrupted after midnight and some times around 2am due to the noises.

I would like the agency to dial him formally to address this issue and also send him a formal notice to reduce the noise during the late hours while everyone is trying to sleep. Also I some one from the agency can come around the weekend to inspect the insulation between the wall shared between me and my neighbor, and if required I am open to get some external insulation installed on the wall to reduce the effect of the noise. I don't want to bother him but I expect the same from his side and I feel we both are leased under your agency, so its better if the communication is carried out from the agencies end.

I hope this issue is taken up swiftly and the recommendations suggested from my side are executed on a priority basis as I have leased out my unit from past 5 years

Thanking you,

Yours Faithfully,

Adam Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the task well and maintains an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for writing to a letting agency. The purpose of the letter is clearly established right from the opening paragraph, where you state the problem regarding the noisy neighbor playing video games late at night. You successfully explain the background of the issue, mentioning the change in shift hours and the recent purchase of a gaming console. Furthermore, you present practical solutions, such as requesting a formal notice and offering to inspect or install external wall insulation. Your ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant details, such as your early working hours with a UK-based client. While the tone and purpose are very clear throughout, ensuring even tighter focus on immediate actionable steps would help push this criterion to the highest tier.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You manage paragraphing effectively, dedicating individual paragraphs to introducing the issue, explaining the context and your schedule, and proposing specific solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Due to this nuisance', and 'Also' are used appropriately to guide the reader smoothly through your narrative and requests. Referencing is generally clear, connecting your personal situation directly to the agency's responsibilities. To achieve an even higher level of cohesion, you could experiment with a wider variety of advanced transition words and ensure that sentence-to-sentence links are seamless rather than relying on standard conjunctions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message with sufficient precision and flexibility. You attempt less common lexical items, such as 'lease agreement', 'insulation', and 'nuisance', demonstrating an awareness of appropriate style for a tenancy complaint. However, there are some minor word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'dial him formally' instead of 'contact him formally' or 'call him', and 'leased under your agency' instead of 'tenants with your agency'. Spelling and word forms are generally well-managed, allowing the communication to flow smoothly without impeding the reader's understanding, though refining these collocations will elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and multi-clause sentences, such as 'The problem started from last week, when has shift hours changed from morning to evening.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing subject pronouns ('when has shift hours changed'), missing prepositions, and occasional comma splices or run-on structures like '...and some times around 2am due to the noises.' Articles and verb forms also show occasional slips, such as 'from past 5 years' instead of 'for the past 5 years'. Despite these frequent minor errors, they rarely impede communication, and your control over basic sentence patterns remains solid.
