IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Hello, I am Arooba Siddiqui. I have studied Pharm-D from Jinnah University for Women which is located in Karachi Pakistan. Currently, I am living in Dubai, United Arab Emirate, but my hometown is in Karachi (Pakistan). I am married and a mother of 2 cute children, one is 8years old a girl and the other one is a boy whose is going to be 5years old soon. I love cooking and drawing. My hobbies are travelling and eating. I love travelling, recently I travelled to Georgia last year in winters because me and my family love to see and play in snowfall. We saw massive snow over there. It was a 10 days trip but we enjoyed a lot. We ate their traditional foods also. So far now, we are planning to go Saudi Arab to perform Umrah because it is me and my family's biggest dream to visit there.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response addresses the task only partially, as it reads more like a casual personal introduction or social media bio rather than a structured task response that fully meets the specific prompt requirements typically expected in this test format. While the writer includes some relevant personal background details such as her education in Pharm-D, current location in Dubai, and family information, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, mentioning hobbies like cooking, drawing, and travelling is done in a very brief list-like manner without any substantial extension or detailed support. The overall position and purpose of the writing are not entirely clear in relation to standard task demands, placing this response firmly within the lower descriptive categories where information is presented disjointedly and lacks the comprehensive development needed for higher achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation visible in the progression from personal background to family details and finally to recent travel experiences and future plans. However, the text lacks a clear overall progression and suffers from an absence of proper paragraphing, being presented as a single block of text. Cohesive devices are minimal, relying heavily on simple additive links like 'and' or repetitive sentence starters such as 'I love cooking' and 'I love travelling'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example in sentences like 'one is 8years old a girl and the other one is a boy whose is going to be 5years old soon,' where the structural transitions feel mechanical and lack fluent logical flow. To improve, the writer needs to group related ideas into distinct paragraphs and utilise a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices to connect sentences smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for basic communication, demonstrating an everyday range appropriate for simple personal topics. The writer attempts some less common items such as 'Pharm-D', 'traditional foods', and 'perform Umrah', but there are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that occasionally draw attention, such as 'Saudi Arab' instead of 'Saudi Arabia' and spacing issues like '8years' and '5years'. Word choice is generally functional, allowing the reader to understand the intended meaning, yet it lacks the precision and stylistic flexibility required for higher bands. The repetition of basic verbs like 'love' and 'saw' also restricts the lexical variety. Expanding the stock of descriptive adjectives and refining collocations would significantly enhance the vocabulary profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, as seen in relative clause errors such as 'a boy whose is going to be 5years old soon' and awkward phrasing like 'recently I travelled to Georgia last year in winters'. Frequent errors in grammar are present throughout the text, including tense consistency issues, missing prepositions, and punctuation or spacing inaccuracies. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to cause occasional difficulty for the reader and reflect a heavy reliance on basic patterns with poor control over more complex grammatical formations.
