IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Anu,
How are you? I hope you are doing well. I am surprised to hear that you are planning to move nearby my neighbourhood. Although, I know the reason behind it, this area is not good for living.
Moreover, the main reason is crime such robbery, vandalism, car theft and break-ins in this area last couple of months ago. There are really less police patrols at night time. The conditions of street lights really worse . As a result, people feel not comfortable walking around the neighbourhood after dark. Owing to there are also some negative impacts on property.
Furthermore, instead of searching houses in this area I will help to find property another locations. I prefer to find nearby Vaughan mills that area is not only good neighbourhood but also good transportation system. There is no crime in Vaughan and quit atmosphere.
I hope you will take my advise seriously and inform me what you will think about it. If you need any kind of help to search property, I am ready to assist you.
Take care and stay in touch.
Best wishes,
Sandy

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by addressing the friend's plan to move, explaining the problems with the neighborhood, and offering alternative suggestions. The tone is appropriately semi-formal for a letter to a friend. The purpose of writing is clear from the beginning. However, some ideas show features of the next level while others remain slightly under-developed. For instance, the discussion regarding crime and property impacts is introduced well, but the supporting details are brief and could be extended further. The transition from warning the friend to proposing Vaughan Mills is relevant and clearly presented, satisfying the core requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped reasonably into paragraphs, moving from the initial greeting and warning, to specific reasons for concern, and finally to alternative housing suggestions and a closing offer of help. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as "Moreover", "As a result", and "Furthermore", although referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader smoothly from the problem to the recommended solution. While it shows good control of overall structure, a slightly more flexible use of cohesive ties would elevate the flow further.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing sufficient range to communicate the main points. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and set phrases, such as "vandalism", "car theft", and "quit atmosphere", though there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For example, writing "such robbery" instead of "such as robbery", "less police patrols" instead of "fewer police patrols", and spelling "quiet" as "quit". Additionally, phrases like "search houses in this area" and "find property another locations" show limitations in natural phrasing. These lexical errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect the characteristics of this level rather than higher precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional clauses and relative constructions. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation that appear throughout the text, but they rarely impede overall communication. Examples of grammatical lapses include "move nearby my neighbourhood" (preposition error), "last couple of months ago" (redundancy), "The conditions of street lights really worse" (missing verb), and "Owing to there are also some negative impacts" (faulty clause structure). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but sentence boundary issues and missing verbs in minor clauses prevent the grammar from reaching a higher level of sustained accuracy.
