IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Smith,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing regarding an issue with the heating system in my house.

The heating has not been working properly since weekend. As a result, i tried to contact you by phone about this problem. But, unfortunately i did not hear back from you.As the weather is extremely cold this year it is difficult to stay comfortably at home without adequate heating.

I have checked the heating system to see if any wires were broken but nothing like that was noticed and everything appears to be normal on my end.Could you please arrange an electrician to visit the property and identify the root cause of the problem?

I would appreciate if you could arrange the necessary repairs as early as possible, as i am concerned that prolonged exposure to the cold could affect my health.

looking forward to hearing from you.

your's sincerely,

Anusha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly explains the heating problem, notes that you have already tried to contact the landlord, and makes a specific request for an electrician and repairs. The reason for urgency is also relevant: you explain that the cold is affecting your comfort and could affect your health. These details address the main purposes of a complaint/request letter and are extended enough to make the situation clear. To strengthen the response further, make the requested action and timing more precise—for example, ask when the electrician can visit, rather than only requesting that this happen “as early as possible.” The letter is effective overall, though a little more specific follow-up would make the request more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear sequence: you introduce the issue, describe your attempt to contact the landlord, explain what you checked, and request a repair. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “As a result” and “I would appreciate if” help connect the points. The organisation is easy to follow throughout. Some links are less smooth where sentences run together, particularly around “problem. But” and “you. As,” and the closing is separated from the body without consistent formatting. Use a space after each full stop and keep the closing on a clearly distinct line. A more varied range of linking expressions would also make the connections feel less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal maintenance request, including “heating system,” “adequate heating,” “root cause,” and “prolonged exposure.” These choices communicate the problem and its possible consequences clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some phrasing is less natural or precise: “since weekend” needs a more idiomatic time expression, while “nothing like that was noticed” is vague and awkward. “Arrange an electrician” is also less natural than a phrase that specifies arranging a visit. These occasional collocation and word-choice issues do not prevent understanding, but more consistently natural phrasing and careful spelling and capitalization would improve the letter’s polish.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes both simple statements and more complex structures, such as “As the weather is extremely cold this year, it is difficult to stay comfortably at home without adequate heating.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and you use requests and conditional phrasing appropriately. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “since weekend,” an article is needed; “I would appreciate if” requires “it” before “if”; and “I tried to contact you by phone about this problem. But” needs sentence separation and spacing. Capitalize “I” consistently, and use “I look forward” rather than the fragment “looking forward” in the closing. These are generally minor, but correcting them would make your control more consistent.
