IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I rented an apartment through your company last month and had a very good experience. The apartment is very comfortable and all the basic fascilities are available here. I was enjoying my stay here untill my neighbours arrived. They also have used your company to find this apartment next to me. I have met them while leaving and coming back home from work sometimes. They are nice people but problem is they play video games till late at night.
The noise of video games from their apartment disturbs my sleep, becuase of which I am unable to wakeup for work at early morning. I am getting late from work on daily basis and due to lack of sound sleep my effeciency at work place has also decreased. My boss is very unsatisfied with my perfomance.
I request you to look into this matter. Kindly send a notice to them, it they want to use video games late at night the volume should be limited to their apartment. I hope you will resolve my problem soon.
yours sincerely,
Ashley.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter clearly explains the situation, its effect on you, and the action you want the company to take. You establish the context by saying you rented through the company, describe the neighbours’ late-night gaming, and explain the consequences for your sleep and work. The request to send them a notice and limit the noise is also clear, so the purpose is maintained throughout. These details give the complaint relevant support. To make the response more fully developed, specify when the noise usually occurs or how long it has continued, and state what further action you would expect if the notice does not resolve it. This would make the requested remedy more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the rental, explains the noise and its consequences, then makes a request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “because of which” and “due to” show how the problem affects your work. This meets the lower-band expectation of a coherent overall structure and shows some control of progression. However, several ideas are crowded into long sentences, particularly the opening paragraph, and repeated references to “here” and “them” make parts less smooth. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing—for example, identify the neighbours directly when describing their gaming. A more natural closing paragraph would also strengthen the letter’s flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbs my sleep,” “lack of sound sleep,” and “performance at work.” However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, which is consistent with this level. Examples include “fascilities,” “untill,” “becuase,” “effeciency,” and “perfomance.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “wake up for work at early morning” and “on daily basis.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations: “wake up early for work” and “on a daily basis.” More precise complaint language, such as “persistent noise” or “late-night gaming,” would add flexibility while keeping the tone appropriate for a formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main message remains clear. For example, “The noise … disturbs my sleep, because of which I am unable to wake up…” attempts to connect cause and consequence, while the final request uses a polite form. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb forms and sentence construction: “I was enjoying my stay” is awkward for a completed period, “They also have used” is not the natural tense here, and “if they want to use video games late at night the volume should be limited” needs clearer clause structure and punctuation. Review tense consistency and use a comma or separate sentence before the condition. These corrections would improve accuracy without changing your clear meaning.
