Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to complaint about my next door neighbour who plays very loud video games late at night and it causing me disturbance with my sleep.
To begin with, since couple of days, they have been playing loud video games and I can not able to sleep. As a result, I have been facing some health issues. Moreover, the noise is really loud during the night time. Some of my other neighbours are also complaining about loud noise. Due to this excessive noise, I have started feeling of insomnia and headache. Hence, I can not able to focus at work.
However, I would like you to take some necessary steps as it causing disturbance to everyone in the flat. If you could give them a written warning then it would be a great help for all of us. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Riddhi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three required points: you identify the neighbour’s late-night gaming, explain its effects on your sleep, health and ability to focus at work, and request that the agency issue a written warning. The request is clear and appropriate for a formal complaint. The timing is given as “since couple of days,” which establishes when the problem began, though a more precise description would make this detail stronger. You also mention that other neighbours are complaining, but this is broad rather than supported with a specific example. Overall, the purpose and your position remain clear, and the relevant ideas are extended with consequences; developing the timeline and impact a little more precisely would strengthen the letter further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall shape: an opening that states the complaint, a paragraph describing the problem and its effects, a request to the agency, and a polite closing. Connectors such as “To begin with,” “Moreover,” “As a result,” and “Hence” help show relationships between ideas. The progression is generally easy to follow, but some linking is mechanical, and “However” does not express a clear contrast before the request. The effects are also grouped together in a sequence that could be more deliberately organised—for example, first describing the sleep disruption, then its consequences at work. More natural transitions and clearer paragraph focus would make the cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for communicating a formal complaint, with relevant expressions such as “excessive noise,” “health issues,” “written warning,” and “assistance with this matter.” These choices make the situation and requested action understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “complaint about” where the verb form is needed, “causing me disturbance,” and “started feeling of insomnia.” “Loud” and “noise” are also repeated several times. Aim for more precise, natural phrases such as “disrupting my sleep” and “experiencing insomnia and headaches,” and vary references to the sound. This would improve flexibility and collocational control while preserving the clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional request: “If you could give them a written warning then it would be a great help.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors recur and affect fluency. Examples include “it causing me disturbance” instead of a correctly formed clause, “since couple of days,” and “I can not able to sleep,” where the verb patterns are faulty. The sentence beginning “Due to this excessive noise” also has an incomplete construction in “I have started feeling of insomnia and headache.” Review auxiliary verbs, articles, and verb patterns, and check each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause. Greater accuracy in these areas would make your varied sentence attempts more effective.
