Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about that I rented a new apartment in 'Partap Nagar' colony last month through your accommodation agency. I selected your aagency because one of my friends recommended me.

I have been living there from a month and all was going perfect. Unfortunately, from the last week, I have noticed very loud noise from the flat which is next to my apartment. Intially, I thought that it would happens only one or two days and I also requested my neighbours to slow down the volume which created from their video game.

I am a student and the noise effects on my study because I cannot concentrate properly ehich effects on my examination. Moreover, with the loud volume I am unable to focus on my another assignments. It also effects on my sleep routine. Overall, I cannot manage my schedule properly due to the disturbance from my neighbours.

In addition, I would like to request you that your agency should take serious action and consider this issue on priority basis. Alternatively, I would also agree to move into another department if you have any available near my university.I hope ypu will consider my problem and response me as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the noise began “from the last week,” describe its effects on your studies, assignments and sleep, and ask the agency to take action or offer another flat. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a clear sense of the problem. The request for a move near your university is also a useful alternative. To strengthen the response further, develop the requested action more precisely—for example, ask the agency to contact the neighbour and set a reasonable quiet-hours expectation. The opening spends some space on how you chose the agency, which is less important than clarifying the ongoing late-night disturbance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the complaint, explains when the noise started, describes its impact, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and connectors such as “Unfortunately,” “Moreover” and “In addition” guide the reader. This coherent arrangement meets the lower-band expectations and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, a few links are mechanical or unclear: “In addition” introduces a request that is more naturally a conclusion, while “Alternatively” does not clearly distinguish the proposed move from the request for action. The opening also includes background that interrupts the focus slightly. Use more direct transitions and make the relationship between the agency’s possible actions explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “concentrate,” “disturbance,” “priority basis” and “consider this issue.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce naturalness. For example, “the noise effects on my study” and “effects on my examination” use an unsuitable form and phrasing; “slow down the volume” is not idiomatic, and “another department” does not clearly mean another flat. There are also spelling slips such as “Intially,” “ehich” and “ypu.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but more accurate, varied language would improve precision. Prefer expressions such as “reduce the volume” and “affects my studies.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including “I thought that it would happens only one or two days” and “I would also agree to move into another department if you have any available near my university.” The meaning is generally recoverable, but errors occur across verb forms, tense, articles and sentence construction. For instance, “I have been living there from a month” needs a different time expression and verb pattern, while “it would happens” has an incorrect verb form. In “I am writing to complain about that I rented,” the clause after “about” is not constructed correctly. Some sentences also run together around “university.I hope.” Greater control of these patterns, alongside a wider range of accurate complex sentences, would make the letter more fluent and professional.
