Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about a neighbour who plays loud video games late at night.

I did not have the problem previously as he used to play during the daytime with a normal speaker. It is recently that he hd bought a speaker and he usually uses it these days even at night time.

The noise affects me as I am not able to sleep well. I have asked him to lower the volume specially during night time but instead he increases the volume showing his arrogance nature.

As both of are renting through the same agency, I have contacted you so that you could write them a formal warning regarding not following the rules. As it is clearly mentioned in the rules book that no one is allowed to play lound sound after 9:30pm.

I hope you would be able to warn himand solve this issue promptly.

Thank you for your corporation and understanding.

Best regards,

Subas Bhugai

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You explain that the problem began recently, when your neighbour bought a speaker and started using it at night; you describe the effect on your sleep; and you ask the agency to issue a formal warning, referring to the 9:30 p.m. rule. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a practical basis for action. The request could be developed slightly further by specifying what you would like to happen if the warning does not resolve the problem, or asking the agency to confirm its next steps. Overall, the key ideas are extended and supported, although the proposed solution remains somewhat general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear sequence: it introduces the complaint, explains when the noise began, describes its impact, and then requests action. Separate paragraphs help the reader identify these stages, and phrases such as “As both of us are renting through the same agency” connect the circumstances to your request. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some links are less smooth: “It is recently that…” is awkward, and the repeated use of “as” to introduce reasons makes the progression feel slightly mechanical. The reference to “him” and then “them” may also leave the agency unsure whether the request concerns one neighbour or multiple people. More precise transitions and consistent referencing would make the organisation more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “formal warning,” “lower the volume,” and “affects me.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which keeps the message from sounding consistently precise. For example, “arrogance nature” is not a natural expression, “lound sound” is unclear, and “thank you for your corporation” uses the wrong word for the intended meaning. There are also spelling slips such as “hd” and “himand.” Aim for accurate, conventional phrases in formal correspondence, such as describing the noise as “excessively loud” and asking the agency to “address the disturbance.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I did not have the problem previously as he used to play during the daytime” and “As it is clearly mentioned in the rules book…”. The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are noticeable. In “As both of are renting,” the pronoun is missing; “It is recently that he hd bought” has an incorrect construction and verb form; and “I hope you would be able to warn himand solve” contains a faulty verb pattern and missing spacing. The sentence beginning “As it is clearly mentioned” is also awkwardly structured. Practise accurate clauses and verb forms, and proofread for missing words and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
