Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complaint about a neighbour who creates a lot of noise at midnight.

Last month, I rented a flat from your accommodation agency. After moving at this new place, first two weeks, I did not experience any problem, however, from last week one of my neighbours creates a loud noise by playing video games at midnight. I already requested him several times, but the level of noise is still same.

I work full-time, due to my work commitments, I have to get up early in the morning. There is a lot of noise, so I am unable to get proper sleep at night. Due to lack of sleep, I feel lazy throught the day, and cannot concentrate properly on my duties.

I would appreciate it if strict rules and regulations can be introduced to limit the noise level, especially late night in the neighbourhood and impose heavy fine who does not follow the rules. In this way, this issue can be controlled.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope appropriate actions will be taken to resolve this problem.

Yours faithfully,

Soni.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You explain that the disturbance began “from last week,” describe its effect on your sleep, energy and concentration, and request that the agency introduce rules and fines. The impact is supported with relevant detail, particularly your need to get up early for work. The request is also clear, though it focuses on general neighbourhood rules rather than directly asking the agency to contact the neighbour or investigate this specific complaint. Developing that practical action, and giving a slightly clearer account of when the gaming occurs, would make the response more fully supported and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain its timing and your attempts to resolve it, describe the consequences, and then make a request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “however” and “Due to” show relationships between ideas. This gives the letter a coherent overall structure. Some connections are less smooth, however: “After moving at this new place, first two weeks” is difficult to follow, and “In this way, this issue can be controlled” repeats the preceding point without adding much. More natural transitions and clearer references to the agency’s specific next steps would make cohesion more flexible and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “work commitments,” “proper sleep,” “concentrate,” and “resolve this problem.” These choices communicate the situation and its effects clearly. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “writing to complaint” should be “writing to complain,” “the level of noise is still same” needs a more natural phrase, and “heavy fine” is not the usual collocation. “Throught” is also misspelled. Aim for accurate word forms and collocations, especially in the request to the agency; this would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the sentence linking your work commitments, early start and lack of sleep. Most ideas remain understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following the complaint. Some grammatical inaccuracies are present, though. For example, “After moving at this new place, first two weeks” has an incomplete or unclear time construction; “one of my neighbours creates” would be more naturally expressed with a present continuous form for an ongoing problem; and “the level of noise is still same” is missing an article. Review articles, verb forms and sentence construction, and break up the long sentence beginning “I work full-time” to improve control.
