IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You rent a flat from an accommodation agency. Your neighbour who rents their flat from the same agency plays very loud video games late at night.

Write a letter to the accommodation agency. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding a noise issue and need your assistance in resolving this matter.

Recently, I rented a flat from one of your agents. While renting, I wasn't told about who my neighbours are and what problems I might encounter while living here. Since last friday, I have been hearing very loud gaming sounds late at night from one of my next door neighbours.

This noise is particularly unpleasant, as it affects my sleep and I have problems going to sleep after I wake up from such sounds.

I would kindly request you to take some apropriate action against this particular neighbour and get the authorities involved so that other neighbours like myself do not experience the same issue.

I hope this letter finds you well, and I'm looking forward to a prompt response.

Yours truthfully,

Muhammad Omar Bin Arshad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three required points: you identify when the noise began (“Since last friday”), explain that it disrupts your sleep, and ask the agency to take action. The request is clear, but “get the authorities involved” is quite severe and does not explain what practical first step you expect the agency to take, such as contacting the neighbour or enforcing quiet hours. The explanation that you were not told who your neighbours were is less relevant than describing the ongoing problem, and the impact could be developed further by explaining how the lost sleep affects your daily life. The response is also one word below the required minimum, so add a little relevant detail to complete the task fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression: it introduces the concern, gives its background and timing, describes the effect, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Since last friday” and “This noise” make the sequence easy to follow. The opening and closing also make the purpose clear. To make the organisation more polished, keep the focus consistently on the noise issue; the sentence about not being told who the neighbours are interrupts the progression slightly. You could also connect the requested action more directly to the problem, for example by asking the agency to contact the neighbour and ensure the noise stops at night.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal complaint, and phrases such as “express my concern,” “resolving this matter,” and “prompt response” communicate the purpose clearly. You also use relevant terms including “late at night” and “affects my sleep.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “gaming sounds” is less clear than “noise from video games,” and “take some apropriate action against” sounds punitive rather than like a measured request to an agency. There is also a spelling error in “apropriate,” and “next door neighbours” could be expressed more naturally as “neighbour next door.” More precise, appropriately formal wording would strengthen the complaint.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the subordinate clause in “as it affects my sleep” and the time clause beginning “Since last friday.” Most sentences are understandable, and the grammar does not obstruct your message. Some phrasing could be made more controlled: “I have problems going to sleep after I wake up from such sounds” is awkwardly structured and would be clearer as “When the noise wakes me, I struggle to fall asleep again.” The sentence beginning “While renting” also has an unclear reference, since it is not immediately clear what “renting” refers to. Check punctuation and capitalisation consistently, including the day name in “last friday.”
