Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to formally escalate the problem which has started since last week. My next door neighbour, Mr. Wilson, who also rented the unit from you has a nephews visiting them for summer holidays. Their son, Alex was found of video games and owns a gaming set-up which was fine before since he was quite considerate. However, these 2 nephews are totally opposite and playing video games at the night on very high volume.

Since my university exam is approching near, my studies are being affected severly because of the current situation going on. I am working in the morning for my part-time job and night time is the only time in which I can focus on my studies. Their late night gaming sessions disturbs me a lot as we share a common wall and our rooms are next to each other.

I would really appriciate the agency's involvment now because Mr. Wilson is not ready to take any action as I requested. They are kids and also, noise is not too loud to call a 911 but it is negatively affecting my studies on a noticable level. Since Mr. Wilson has mentioned that nephews are staying for entire summer holidays, I want agency to address this concern and be a arbitutory body in this matter. There is clear term in lease agreement that agency can be contacted and asked to give formal warnings to tenant for their inconsiderate or inappropriate behaviour.

I would like to solve this matter quickely and appriciate your swift response.

Sincerly,

Pankti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate request to the agency. You identify when the issue began (“since last week”), explain its effect on your exam preparation and study routine, and ask the agency to intervene because your neighbour has not acted on your request. The reference to the lease agreement also supports your request for a formal warning. These details make the complaint purposeful and relevant. To strengthen the response further, clarify the timeline and who is making the noise: the opening mentions a nephew, while later sentences refer to two nephews and then “their son.” A more precise account would make the circumstances and responsibility clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the complaint, explains its impact, and then states the action you want. Paragraphing supports these stages, and links such as “Since” and “However” help show relationships between ideas. The closing also returns to the request for a response. Some connections are less clear because the account shifts between “a nephews,” “Their son,” and “these 2 nephews,” making it difficult to follow exactly who is visiting and playing. The long third paragraph also combines the neighbour’s refusal, the noise level, the holiday period, and the lease terms. Grouping the requested action and supporting lease detail more cleanly would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “formally escalate,” “late night gaming sessions,” “common wall,” and “formal warnings.” These choices communicate the issue and its impact, and the tone is generally suitable. There are, however, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions, such as “approching,” “severly,” “involvment,” “arbitutory body,” and “solve this matter quickely.” “A gaming set-up” is understandable, but “gaming equipment” would sound more natural in this context. Greater accuracy with spelling and collocation would make the letter more polished and precise while retaining its clear message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example the relative clause in “My next door neighbour, Mr. Wilson, who also rented the unit from you…” and the conditional explanation beginning “Since my university exam…”. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. Examples include “who also rented” where present-tense “rents” is needed, “has a nephews,” and “playing video games at the night,” which has problems with number, verb form, and article/preposition use. Subject–verb agreement is also incorrect in “sessions disturbs me.” Review tense consistency, singular and plural forms, and agreement, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
