Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Madam,
I am writing to express my frustrartion regarding loud noise of video games at night caused by neighbour. Let me explain my situation, the problem first begun in first week of March and it continues every other day. I tried to communicate with them, however there are no positive results.
The noise cause me high degree of distraction from my studies and its very difficult to focus. As i am preparing for my university final exam loud music act as a huddle for me. Moreover, it negatively affect my sleep schedule as well.
Lastly, I would like you to write a formal letter of recommendation to the tenants living in unit-202 which is rented by your agency to reduce the loud noise after 10pm and folllow the community guidlines according to renting contract. Furthermore, make some quite zones in society in order to use that space for studies and other crucial works.
Your Sincerely,
Lovepreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you say the noise began in the first week of March, explain that it distracts you from studying and affects your sleep, and ask the agency to contact the tenants about reducing noise after 10 p.m. The request is relevant, but the proposed “formal letter of recommendation” is unclear and does not naturally describe action an agency would take. The suggestion to create quiet zones is also less directly connected to resolving the neighbour’s behaviour. To make the response more complete, specify a practical step, such as asking the agency to remind the tenants of the noise rules or investigate if the problem continues. The purpose is clear overall, though some ideas need fuller, more precise development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, and then make requests. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Lastly” help signal the relationship between points. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Let me explain my situation” is followed by several separate details, while the final paragraph combines a request to contact the tenants with a broader proposal for quiet zones. This makes the main action you want from the agency less prominent. Use a clearer transition into the requested action and separate the immediate solution from any additional suggestion. Overall, the organisation is coherent, although some cohesion is mechanical and the final paragraph could be more focused.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “express my frustration,” “distraction,” “sleep schedule,” and “community guidelines.” These choices communicate the main concerns, but several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “frustrartion,” “huddle,” “folllow,” and “guidlines.” Some phrases are also unnatural or unclear, particularly “formal letter of recommendation” and “high degree of distraction.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the noise as “a major distraction” and ask the agency to “issue a formal reminder.” Your range is adequate for the task and includes some attempts at more formal language, but errors and awkward phrasing are noticeable enough to limit clarity in places.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “I tried to communicate with them, however there are no positive results” and the reason clause beginning “As I am preparing for my university final exam.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the letter. Examples include “The noise cause” instead of “The noise causes,” “its very difficult” instead of “it is very difficult,” and “it negatively affect” instead of “it negatively affects.” The opening also needs an article and clearer sentence structure: “the loud noise of video games at night caused by my neighbour.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and use a consistent formal style. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentences easier to read.
