Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am Thilan Senawirathna who lives in unit 6/10, Kelvin Avenue, Hectorville. I am writing this latter to make a complain about my neighbour who lives in number 7th apartment. We both renting from Ray White rental company.
I am making this complain because of the extreame noice coming from our neighbours apartment. The neighbours doing well untill they got another person into their apartment few months ago. After that most of every night he plays video games at nigh time and it is very loud.
I need quite time at night to sleep since I am working all day and need to rest for the next day. It is hard to sleep at night with this very loud video game sounds. Most of the time he start playing around 8 pm and I can not even hear news on my TV.
Therefore, I would appriciate if your agency can look into the matter soon as possible. It would be better if you can ask them to keep the sound to themselves or play in daytime. In addition to that I am really happy if you can make our houses soundproof.
Kind regards,
Thilan Senawirathna

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that the noise began after another person moved into the neighbour’s flat a few months ago, describe its effect on your sleep and ability to hear the television, and request that the agency intervene. The purpose and complaint are clear throughout. The request for the neighbour to reduce the volume or play during the day is relevant, although asking the agency to soundproof the homes is less clearly justified and could be framed as a secondary option. To develop the situation more fully, specify how often the late-night gaming continues or whether you have already tried speaking to the neighbour, and make the action you want from the agency more precise, such as contacting the tenant and enforcing quiet hours.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, explains when the noise started, describes its impact, and ends with requests. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “After that” and “Therefore” make the progression clear. Some connections are less smooth, however. “I am making this complain because” repeats the purpose already stated in the opening, while “In addition to that” introduces soundproofing without explaining how it relates to the agency’s immediate response. The reference to “he” is understandable but could be clearer by identifying the neighbour or the new occupant consistently. A more concise opening and more direct links between the problem, its effects, and requested action would make the cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “very loud,” “sleep,” “rest,” and “look into the matter.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce the letter’s professional tone: “latter” for “letter,” “complain” for “complaint,” “extreame,” “noice,” “nigh time,” and “appriciate.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “keep the sound to themselves” and “make our houses soundproof.” Aim for accurate, conventional language for a formal complaint, such as “excessive noise,” “disturbing my sleep,” and “take appropriate action.” Proofreading spelling and choosing natural collocations would improve clarity and formality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, and the main message remains understandable. There are, however, recurring errors in sentence construction and verb forms. For example, “We both renting” needs an auxiliary (“We both rent” or “We are both renting”), and “The neighbours doing well” is incomplete because it lacks a finite verb. In “Most of the time he start playing,” the subject and verb do not agree; “he starts” is needed. The opening sentence, “I am Thilan Senawirathna who lives…,” is also awkwardly structured and would be clearer as “My name is… and I live…”. Work on complete clauses, agreement, and consistent sentence patterns while retaining some complex sentences.
