Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am Sumitha Gunatilake (from Unit 6/10 Kelvin Avenue, Hectorville), writing to complain on my neighbour who lives in unit 7 which is also rented from the Harris Real Estate Agency.

The problem started from last week and he is being very loud when playing video games at midnight to around 2 am everyday.

Me and my husband, both are doctors working in Adelaide hospital. So, we usually work 14 hour shift at day time. We are unable to get a good sleep at night as our neighbour is very loud. My son is also taking examinations next week and he has difficulities on studying with the noise.

I strongly ask your to help on this regards by advising my neighbour to keep quiet at night.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Sumitha Gunatilake

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you identify when the noise began (“from last week”), explain its effects on your sleep and your son’s studying, and ask the agency to advise the neighbour to be quiet. The details about your night shifts and your son’s upcoming examinations make the complaint relevant and clear. However, the request is quite limited, and the effects could be developed further—for example, by explaining how the lack of sleep affects your work or asking the agency to follow up if the noise continues. The response also falls 10 words short of the required minimum, so adding a little more detail would help you meet the task requirements as well as strengthen the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible order: you introduce the complaint, describe the noise, explain its impact, and make a request before closing. Paragraph breaks help distinguish the main points, and the reader can follow the situation without difficulty. The progression is clear, though the short paragraphs and limited linking make the letter feel somewhat abrupt. For instance, the shift from your work schedule to your son’s examinations could be connected more smoothly, and the request could follow directly from the effects you have described. Use a few natural links such as “As a result” or “In addition,” while avoiding unnecessary repetition. A fuller closing paragraph could also make the final request and expected follow-up clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for making the complaint understandable, with relevant expressions such as “plays video games,” “good sleep,” and “examinations.” You also use some task-appropriate language, including “complain” and “consideration.” However, several choices or combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “complain on my neighbour,” “keep quiet at night,” and “help on this regards.” The spelling error “difficulities” also reduces accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, but they limit precision and naturalness. Practise common formal-letter collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise phrases would make the complaint sound more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and a more developed explanation of how the noise affects your household, and the main message remains clear. Some grammatical errors are present, including “Me and my husband, both are doctors,” where the subject and sentence structure are faulty, and “I strongly ask your to help,” which has an incorrect pronoun form. The sentence about working “14 hour shift at day time” also needs more accurate article, plural, and preposition use. These errors rarely obstruct understanding, but they show that control is not yet consistent. Review subject forms and agreement, articles and plurals, and practise combining ideas into accurate complex sentences.
