Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about my neighbour who rents their apartment from your esteemed agency. They are playing very loudly electronic games at the late hours of the night.
Firstly, this problem began when they moved last month to the flat. Although I talked to them many times, they keep annoying me every night. Their family head who promised to help, but nothing happened.
Secondly, I have important university exams and I can't study with all these noises. I am studying online from home and I need a quite place to concentrate, particularly during the exams period. Moreover, I cannot sleep at night, leading to lower concentrating at the exams..
If you could help me to move to another flat at the same building, I would be very grateful.
I would appreciate it if the problem could be solved as soon as possible.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Ahmed Ali.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose throughout. You identify when the issue began (“when they moved last month”), explain its effects on your study and sleep, and make a specific request to move to another flat in the same building. The details about university exams and studying from home help show why the noise matters. The request for a move is clear, although the letter could develop the agency’s options more fully—for example, asking it to contact the neighbour first or investigate the complaint if the noise continues. Overall, the relevant points are covered and supported, with some room to extend the proposed solution and the account of what has already been tried.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The message follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, explains its history, describes its impact, and then states the requested action. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” make the sequence easy to follow. The closing is also suitable for a formal letter. However, the numbered transitions feel somewhat mechanical, and “Moreover” adds another effect without much development. The sentence “Their family head who promised to help, but nothing happened” is not smoothly connected to the preceding account, so the reader has to infer who promised what. Linking the neighbour’s promise more clearly to your attempts to resolve the issue would make the progression more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “complain,” “concentrate,” “as soon as possible,” and “further information.” These choices communicate the situation and its impact clearly. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural expressions: “playing very loudly electronic games” is awkwardly formed, “quite place” appears to mean “quiet place,” and “lower concentrating” does not express the intended effect naturally. “Their family head” is also an unclear choice for the person who offered help. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for familiar, accurate collocations such as “play video games loudly,” “a quiet place,” and “my concentration has suffered.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex forms, such as “Although I talked to them many times, they keep annoying me every night” and “If you could help me to move…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “Their family head who promised to help, but nothing happened,” the clause lacks a complete main structure; write, for example, “The head of the family promised to help, but nothing happened.” The phrase “I need a quite place” also has an article-and-word-form issue, while “leading to lower concentrating at the exams” is not grammatically well formed. There is also an extra full stop after “exams.” Check sentence completeness, articles, and the structure of participle clauses when editing.
