Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to formally inform you about my current situation at my residence. My neighbour who happens to have rented this accommodation from you plays a very loud video games late at night. It is very disturbing.

This issues of loud video games started since his friend moved over to the house. This has been happening for three weeks now and I have not been able to get enough sleep since then. His friend would invite two of his other friends for a games night almost every day.

This noise has ben affecting me so badly that I can not get to sleep or read a book at my quite time again. It is also affecting my productivity at work because I am deprived of a good sleep needed for brain function.

Would you kindly talk to him about the late night games. He could do that with his friends during the day or weekends. All the late night video games should stop or he could look for another accommodation elsewhere.

I believe there would a change after your meeting with him. Looking forward to getting a positive outcome. Thanks for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Lynda.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You explain that the disturbance began when the neighbour’s friend moved in and has continued for three weeks, describe its effects on sleep, reading and work, and ask the agency to speak to the neighbour and stop the late-night gaming. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a clear basis for action. The request is also specific, although suggesting that the neighbour find other accommodation is quite forceful and less practical than asking for quiet hours or enforcement of tenancy rules. To strengthen the response further, explain briefly what outcome you expect after the agency contacts the neighbour.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the complaint, gives its duration and cause, explains the impact, and then makes a request. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “since then” and “because” show relationships between ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement, with some evidence of the more flexible organisation expected at the next level. However, the final two paragraphs repeat the request for a change, and “I believe there would a change after your meeting with him” is not smoothly connected to the proposed action. Use a more purposeful closing paragraph and clearer links between the requested steps and the outcome you want.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “formally inform,” “disturbing,” “productivity,” and “positive outcome.” The reader can understand the main problem and its effects. However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, or spelling problems reduce precision: “a very loud video games,” “moved over to the house,” “quite time,” and “deprived of a good sleep” are not natural or accurate expressions in context. “Games night” is also repeated rather than varied. These issues fit a level where vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the basic message but errors are noticeable. Build a more precise set of phrases for noise complaints and check spelling and collocations when proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes some longer sentence forms, for example, “This noise has ben affecting me so badly that I can not get to sleep or read a book,” and the main meaning remains understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur in basic sentence construction as well as in attempts at more complex structures. Examples include “This issues … started,” “I believe there would a change,” and “He could do that with his friends during the day or weekends.” There are also agreement and article problems in “a very loud video games.” These errors make the writing less controlled, even though the reader can generally follow it. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, complete verb phrases, and singular/plural forms, then vary sentence structures while keeping them accurate.
