Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction with my neighbour who rented the flat from your agency as well.

Recently, my neighbour has rented the apartment next to my door from your agency. It was all good in the first few days when he started living there however, from last few days he has been making a lot of noise. I met him

in the common area of the building one day and there I came to know he is still a bachelor; due to this he keeps on inviting his friends during the night time quite often lately. He party past midnight . As a result, my family and me are not able to sleep due to loud music. My kids have school in the morning and due not enough sleep they find it very hard to get up in the morning. I also find it challenging to focus in the office while staying most of the night awake.

Therefore, I would like you to send a letter to him about this problem so that I can live hassle free and focus properly in my life.

Thank you in advance for your kind effort regarding this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Navneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and maintain a suitable formal purpose: you explain that the disturbance began after the neighbour moved in, describe the effects on your children’s sleep and your concentration at work, and request that the agency contact him. These details make the complaint relevant and understandable. The response also shows some development beyond simply stating that the noise is unpleasant. However, the timing is not fully precise: “from last few days” is vague, and the task specifically concerns loud video games, whereas the letter mainly describes parties and loud music. Your requested action is also limited to sending him a letter. To strengthen the response, identify the gaming noise clearly, give a more exact timeframe, and explain what outcome you expect, such as quiet after a stated hour.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from the reason for writing to the background, the effects, and finally the request. Paragraphing helps separate the main complaint from the requested action, and connectors such as “As a result” and “Therefore” make the relationship between ideas clear. Some links are less smooth, however: the account of meeting the neighbour and learning he is a bachelor interrupts the explanation of when the noise began, and the connection between his being a bachelor and inviting friends is not clearly established. The long middle paragraph also combines several points. Organise the chronology more directly, then use separate paragraphs for the noise and its effects, and the action you want the agency to take.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “dissatisfaction,” “common area,” “challenging to focus,” and “hassle free.” These choices show some range beyond basic words. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a formal complaint: “next to my door” would be clearer as “next door,” “party past midnight” is not well formed, and “kind effort regarding this matter” sounds awkward. The response also refers to “loud music” rather than clearly naming the video-game noise in the task. Aim for precise, natural collocations and a consistently formal register. For example, describe the noise as “loud gaming sounds” and say that it “disrupts my sleep” rather than relying on less natural phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including the contrast in “It was all good in the first few days … however” and the cause-and-effect sentence beginning “As a result.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. Examples include “from last few days,” “my family and me are not able to sleep,” and “He party past midnight,” where articles, pronoun case, and verb form need attention. The sentence beginning “Recently, my neighbour has rented” also gives an unclear account of when the neighbour moved in. There are run-on or poorly punctuated sections, such as the sentence joining “there” and “however.” Review past and present perfect forms, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures.
