Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my frustration regarding the loud voice at nighttime caused by one of my neighbour.

My neighbour flatmate, moved in this apartment last January. From that period till today, he usually plays video games at night with high volume, which in turn affects my daily life.

After a long tiring day from work, I usually prefer minimum eight hours of sleep for my body to feel relaxed. But, since past 2 months I could not get proper sleep at night because of the loud noise, which affects my productivity at work. Moreover, somedays, I have to complete pending works at night to prepare presentation for next day. However, due to the noise I cannot concentrate on my work which inturn affect me to complete task on time as well.

I hope your agency can contact him and ask him to lower the volume at night times, so everyone, including my self in this apartment get proper rest and complete our work on time.

Yours Sincerely,

Catherine Samantha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the neighbour moved in last January, describe the effects on sleep and work, and ask the agency to contact him about lowering the volume. The examples about needing rest after work and preparing a presentation make the impact relevant and personal. The request is also clear, though it could be more specific—for example, asking the agency to remind the tenant of quiet hours or to follow up if the noise continues. The timeline is slightly unclear because the noise is said to have occurred since January, while the sleep problem is described as lasting only two months. Clarifying this distinction would make the account more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: purpose, background, effects, and requested action. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “However” help connect the consequences. This gives the letter a coherent overall structure. Some connections are less smooth, however: “From that period till today” is followed by “since past 2 months,” leaving the timeline difficult to follow, and the final sentence combines the request with several outcomes in a crowded way. A few transitions also feel mechanical. Make the chronology explicit and divide the final request from its intended benefit; this would make cohesion more flexible and the progression clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “frustration,” “productivity,” “concentrate,” and “pending works.” The meaning remains clear throughout, and the vocabulary is relevant to a formal complaint. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “loud voice” for gaming noise, “my neighbour flatmate,” and “minimum eight hours of sleep.” There are also spelling or spacing issues in “somedays,” “inturn,” and “my self.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Choose established phrases such as “loud gaming noise,” “my neighbour,” and “at least eight hours of sleep,” and check compound words and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple statements and more complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “After a long tiring day from work” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most ideas can be understood, but some grammatical errors remain. In “one of my neighbour,” the noun should be plural; “My neighbour flatmate, moved in this apartment” has an unclear construction and incorrect punctuation; and “since past 2 months I could not get” needs a more accurate time expression and tense. The final sentence also has agreement problems in “everyone … get.” These errors rarely obstruct the message, but they reduce accuracy. Practise article and plural forms, subject–verb agreement, and consistent tense when describing a situation that continues.
