Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the noise problem from my neighbourhood. Although the building itself is so beautiful, but my neighbours playing loud video games in the night.

To begin with, I recently moved in the building a month ago and from the very first day I am facing the same problem. My neighnours are playing the video games with loud voice on daily basis.

I am working in the manufacturing company as a Mechanical engineer and after getting tired from my work, I just wanna rest at my home in calm environment but when I am going to sleep they started playing game around 9:00 Pm and because of that I could not sleep properly. As a result of this, I am not able consentrate on my work.

I would appreciate it if you could investigate that issue and make a rule or just upgrade the guidelines that after 9:00 pm no loud music and parties allowed in the building.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Parveen saini

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three required points: you say the problem began when you moved in a month ago, explain that the noise disrupts your sleep and concentration at work, and ask the agency to investigate and introduce a rule. The purpose and your dissatisfaction are clear, and the request is relevant. Some details are less fully developed: for example, you could clarify whether the gaming continues every night and explain what practical action you expect, such as contacting the neighbour or enforcing quiet hours. The proposed rule mentions loud music and parties rather than video games specifically, so linking the request directly to the neighbour’s behaviour would make the response more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the complaint, gives background, describes the effects, and ends with a request and appropriate closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “As a result” make relationships between ideas clear. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The opening sentence about the building being beautiful does not contribute much to the complaint, and “Although … but” makes the transition awkward. The long paragraph about work, rest, the noise, and its consequences could be divided or streamlined so each point is easier to follow. More direct links between the neighbour’s gaming and the requested quiet-hours rule would also strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “dissatisfaction,” “investigate,” and “concentrate.” The language is generally understandable, but several noticeable spelling and word-choice or collocation errors limit precision: “neighnours,” “consentrate,” “playing … with loud voice,” and “in calm environment.” Informal wording such as “wanna” is also unsuitable for a formal letter to an agency. Some expressions are vague or not quite natural, including “noise problem from my neighbourhood” and “upgrade the guidelines.” Aim for accurate, conventional phrases such as “noise from my neighbour’s flat,” “at a high volume,” and “revise the building’s quiet-hours policy.” This would make the complaint sound more fluent and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional request (“I would appreciate it if…”) and a result clause (“As a result of this…”). The main message remains clear, but some sentence structures and verb forms are inaccurate. In “Although the building itself is so beautiful, but…,” the concessive clause is incorrectly combined with “but,” and “my neighbours playing” lacks a finite verb. “I recently moved in the building a month ago” also has an awkward tense and preposition pattern; “I moved into the building a month ago” is more accurate. In “when I am going to sleep they started,” the tense shifts unnecessarily. Review clause construction, tense consistency, and articles, as in “in a calm environment,” to improve control.
