Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

i am writing to complain about the excessive noise that is coming from my neighbour's flat, which is also rented through your agency.

I moved in this flat last month. Initially everything was perfected in this accommodation. But after the one week, I started to hear the noise at the middle of night. Firstly, i do not want to take any step but now it is unbearable. This noise has affects on my sleep. As a result, I feel tried everday. Moreover, I also has an exam from the next week and because of the noise of the video games, I am not able to concentrate on my study.

I would like you to take the essential step to mitigate this problem. I want you to ask them to set the lower voice while they are playing the video games. If the disturbance continues, i would like you to give them formal warning or take the further step according to tenancy agreement.

I hope you resolve this problem as soon as possible as i want to continue stay here in the future.

Thank for your time.

Sincerely,

Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You explain that the noise began after your first week in the flat, describe its effects on your sleep and ability to study for an upcoming exam, and request that the agency first ask the neighbour to lower the volume, then issue a formal warning or take further action. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a clear response to consider. To develop the ideas further, specify more precisely when the gaming occurs—for example, the usual hours or days—and make the requested action slightly more direct. The closing also communicates that you wish to remain in the flat, reinforcing your position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it began and how it affects you, then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “Moreover,” and “If the disturbance continues” help show relationships between ideas. The conditional request is particularly easy to follow. Some transitions are less natural or slightly mechanical, including “Firstly” after “Initially,” and the opening paragraph moves quickly from moving in to the noise beginning. A more precise time sequence and fewer unnecessary signposts would make the progression smoother. Overall, the reader can follow the letter’s purpose and supporting details without difficulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “excessive noise,” “unbearable,” “concentrate,” “formal warning,” and “tenancy agreement.” This gives you enough range to explain the problem and request action. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce naturalness: “everything was perfected” does not fit the intended meaning, “set the lower voice” is unclear, and “tried everday” appears to mean “tired every day.” “Essential step” and “further step” are also less idiomatic in this context. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “take appropriate action” and “turn down the volume.” These improvements would make the complaint sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “my neighbour’s flat, which is also rented through your agency” and a conditional sentence beginning “If the disturbance continues.” These structures help communicate the complaint clearly. However, errors occur across verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction: “This noise has affects on my sleep,” “I also has an exam,” and “I want to continue stay here” are examples. There are also inconsistent capitalisation of “I” and punctuation issues, such as the comma after the greeting. These errors sometimes make the reader pause, although the intended meaning remains understandable. Practise accurate sentence patterns and proofread for agreement and verb forms.
