Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I am getting affected by the noise that my neighbour makes at night by loud volume of video games.

This problem began a month ago, when I started living in this flat.I am tolerating this from a long time but I didnot told you about this as I tried to contact him to resolve this issue.I told him I am working 8 hours a day .As a result,I have to sleep early at night so,I can wakeup fresh in the morning.

Moreover, this noise leads me several sleepless nights.Resultantly, not only my health is undergoing several issues but it is ruining my worklife also. So,I got scolded at work numerous times for not giving good performance at work by skipping crucial meetings.Even I got a lot of

warnings that they will fired me if I didnot improved me.

At the end,I would say just tell them to play the games at loud volume before a certain time.I am not saying to stop it completely but tell them to take other individuals under consideration while doing that.I am really pissed by their behaviour towards other people.I hope you will try to resolve my issue as soon as possible.

I will wait for your response.

Your Sincerely,

Satwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you say the problem began when you moved in a month ago, explain that the noise disrupts your sleep and work, and ask the agency to intervene. The impact is supported with specific consequences, including being scolded at work and receiving warnings. This gives the letter a clear purpose and meets the main requirements. Some details are less fully developed, however: the request that the neighbour play games loudly “before a certain time” is vague, and it is not entirely clear whether you want the agency to contact the neighbour or take another action. A more precise, polite request—such as asking the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours—would make the response more complete and appropriately formal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable progression: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, make a request, and close. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “As a result” show relationships between ideas. However, some linking is mechanical or unclear. “At the end” does not naturally introduce your request, while “Resultantly” and “So” are used close together. The long middle paragraph also combines the history of the problem, your work schedule, health effects, and workplace consequences, making the progression harder to follow. Separate the background from the effects, and use a direct transition such as “I would therefore be grateful if…” to lead into a specific request.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “sleepless nights,” “crucial meetings,” and “performance.” There are also attempts at more formal or varied wording, such as “resolve this issue.” However, several choices and collocations are unnatural or too informal for a letter to an agency: “getting affected by the noise,” “this noise leads me several sleepless nights,” and “I am really pissed” are examples. “Worklife” is also not the natural form in this context. These choices sometimes make the message less polished, although the main meaning remains understandable. Aim for precise complaint-letter phrases and a consistently courteous register, especially when describing your frustration and the action you expect.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures such as “As a result, I have to sleep early at night so…” and the contrast in “I am not saying to stop it completely but…”. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some errors in verb forms, sentence construction, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “I didnot told you” should use a past-tense auxiliary with the base verb, and “they will fired me” needs the base form after “will.” The sentence beginning “Even I got a lot of warnings” is also awkwardly constructed, and several commas are missing or misplaced. Review auxiliary verbs and sentence boundaries, then proofread punctuation and spacing.
