Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writting this letter to complain regarding excessive noise from my neighbour's flat, which is rented from your agency. This problem is began 2 weeks ago, when she started playing video games at night time on high volume which can be clearly heard through the walls.
At first, I thought it is temporary but it is increasing day by day which is affecting my mental health. I could not sleep properly which leads frustration, tiredness throughout the next day. I can not even concentrate on my work, it is putting really negative affect on my performance.
I am kindly appealing to the agency to resolve this issue and to remind my neighbour about the building's rules about noise at night. I hope this problem will be tackled soon.
Thank you for your time and I will be waiting for your response.
Yours faithfully
Irandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: the noise began “2 weeks ago,” it affects your sleep, mood and work, and you ask the agency to remind your neighbour about the rules. The complaint is clear and appropriately formal. The effects are more fully explained than the requested action, which remains general: you could specify that the agency should contact the neighbour and ask them to reduce the volume during quiet hours. The opening also says the problem is “increasing day by day,” but gives no further detail about how often or how late the gaming continues. The response is one word below the required minimum, so add a little relevant detail to complete the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression from introducing the complaint, to describing its effects, and then requesting action. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “At first” and “which” help connect ideas. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. However, some connections could be smoother: “At first, I thought it is temporary but it is increasing day by day” combines a change in expectation with the worsening problem somewhat awkwardly. The large spaces between paragraphs do not affect meaning, but consistent formatting would make the letter look more polished. Overall, the organisation is clear; more precise links between cause, duration and impact would strengthen the progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “excessive noise,” “affecting my mental health,” and “concentrate on my work.” These phrases communicate the problem and its consequences clearly. There are some inaccurate or unnatural choices, however: “negative affect on my performance” should be “negative effect,” and “I am kindly appealing” is not a natural collocation in this context. “At night time” is understandable but less concise than “at night.” The spelling “writting” also needs correction. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “submit a complaint,” “disrupting my sleep,” and “contact my neighbour.” These refinements would make the vocabulary more controlled and idiomatic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “my neighbour’s flat, which is rented from your agency” and a result clause describing how the noise affects your work. The main message remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “This problem is began” should be “This problem began,” and “I thought it is temporary” needs consistent tense, such as “I thought it was temporary.” In “I could not sleep properly which leads frustration,” the verb tense and sentence connection need correction; write “I cannot sleep properly, which leads to frustration.” There are also missing articles in “leads frustration” and “putting really negative affect.” Review tense consistency and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
