Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complaint an issue regarding a noise which is coming from my neighbor's house. I would like to express my situation and ask you to take appropriate action.

I rented a flat from your accommodation agency since a year. It was a 2bhk flat. Unfortunately, from last two weeks, I am disturbing from a loud noise during the nights. It is coming from the flat which is next to me, on right. It is rented by two young males. They play very loud video games till late night.

I am a working woman. I need time to work and proper sleep. Sometimes, I have to complete my projects during nights and due to this noise, I cannot concentrate on my work. Moreover, I am not able to sleep earlier and in the next morning, it feel lazy. My life has disturbed so much.

I want relief from this distraction. I would like therefore appreciate it if you could talk with them on your behalf. So, they can either change their play time or reduce their noise. If they will behave same in future again, it becomes really difficult for me to stay here for long. Please solve this issue as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Jashanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the noise began “from last two weeks,” describe its effect on your concentration, sleep, and work, and ask the agency to speak to the neighbours and seek a change. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a practical request. The impact is supported with personal examples, especially having to complete projects at night and feeling tired the next morning. To develop the response further, clarify the timeline and make the requested action more specific—for example, asking the agency to remind the tenants of quiet hours or confirm what steps it will take. The conditional warning about possibly leaving is understandable, but could be expressed more diplomatically.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, gives background and identifies the source, explains the effects, and then requests action. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “Unfortunately,” “Moreover,” and “therefore” help connect ideas. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. “I would like therefore appreciate it” interrupts the flow, while “So, they can either…” is a fragment-like follow-on rather than a fully integrated request. The reference to the neighbours as “two young males” is not essential to the progression. For stronger cohesion, connect the requested actions directly to the agency’s intervention and use fewer abrupt sentence breaks.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “appropriate action,” “concentrate,” “distraction,” and “consideration,” and the reader can understand the main problem throughout. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “writing to complaint an issue,” “I am disturbing from a loud noise,” and “My life has disturbed so much” do not express the intended meanings idiomatically. “Change their play time” is also less natural than a phrase describing when they play. Aim to learn common complaint-letter combinations and choose precise expressions for effects, such as disruption to sleep or difficulty concentrating. This would make the vocabulary more fluent and appropriate without requiring unnecessarily complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple sentences and attempts at more complex forms, such as “Sometimes, I have to complete my projects during nights and due to this noise, I cannot concentrate on my work.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “I rented a flat … since a year” uses an unsuitable tense and time expression; “from last two weeks” also needs a different construction. There are agreement and verb-form problems in “in the next morning, it feel lazy” and “If they will behave same in future again.” The request sentence, “I would like therefore appreciate it,” is missing a grammatical element. Practise present-perfect forms for situations continuing to the present, and check subject–verb agreement and conditional structures.
