Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam ,

I hope you are doing well. I am Eva from the Unit 21- Two winds way of David Accomodation agency. This email is for lodging a complaint against my neighbour from the Divine heights Flat no. 411 on 4 th floor for the immensely loud noise they have been creating. It is the adjoining flat than ours . Since the flat is just across the street, it is causing me a problem in doing my work and studies.

This issue took place two weeks ago , the loud noise starts at around 5 PM in the afternoon when i just came back from the work and relax for few minutes. Also, that last till midnight when i want to concentrate and study for my college. I first thought that the issue would be due to the long weekend and would stop after, but it seems like an everyday issue. Furthermore , I tried solving the issue myself by complaining in the Flat to the security downstairs and the manager of the Divine Heights. Seemingly , this issue can not be resolved by them thus , I mailed you as it has been bothering me since 2 weeks and I have exams next week.

I would like you to take some serious actions as soon as possible and take actions on this matter at your earliest convienience. Thank you so much for your support and assistance to this matter.

Yours Sincerely ,

Eva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you say the noise began two weeks ago, explain that it disrupts your rest, work and studying, and ask the agency to act. The details about the noise continuing until midnight and your exams next week make the impact clear. However, the request for action is less fully developed than the explanation of the problem: “take some serious actions” does not specify what you want the agency to do, such as contact the neighbour or enforce quiet hours. Some details are also confusing, including whether the neighbour’s flat is adjoining or across the street. A more precise account and a specific remedy would make the letter more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening complaint, a paragraph explaining the timeline and impact, and a closing request. The sequence from the noise beginning to your attempts to resolve it is generally easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Also” to connect points. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or the references are unclear: “that last till midnight” does not clearly identify what “that” refers to, and the description of the flat as both “adjoining” and “just across the street” interrupts the flow. Organising the timeline, effects and requested action more distinctly, and using clearer references, would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “lodging a complaint,” “immensely loud noise,” and “bothering me.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the issue, and the reader can understand your main points. However, some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “take some serious actions,” “solving the issue myself,” and “support and assistance to this matter.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “Accomodation,” “convienience,” and “relax” where a noun is needed, also reduce precision. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise wording will make the complaint sound both clearer and more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, explaining that you expected the noise to stop after the long weekend before noting that it has become an everyday issue. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. In “the loud noise starts … when i just came back,” the tense shifts awkwardly; “that last till midnight” also has an unclear subject and verb form. There are further issues with articles and sentence construction in “It is the adjoining flat than ours.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including lowercase “i” and spaces before commas. Review tense consistency and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
