Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hope you're doing well. As a tenant in Flat no. 405, I am writing in order to draw your attention to an issue that I have been facing since a few weeks now. I have been hearing extremely loud noises especially at late night coming from the apartment next door, and it began last month.

This has created a huge problem to my day to day life. During the weekdays, I tend to sleep early at night in order to get a good night's sleep as I need to wake up quite early for my work. Due to the constant noise, my sleep is getting disturbed. On top of that, even after requesting them a few times now, the noise has not been reduced.

Therefore, I would like to request the agency to kindly take some action and enforce stricter rules against the noise level allowed in the building, especially at night. This will be beneficial for everyone to live peacefully.

Warm regards,

John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points: the noise began last month, it disrupts your sleep before work, and you ask the agency to take action. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the request is appropriate for a formal complaint. The effect on you is supported with a relevant detail about needing to wake early, while mentioning that you have already spoken to the neighbour adds useful context. To develop the response further, specify that the neighbour is playing video games and describe the late-night timing more precisely. Your proposed action—enforcing stricter noise rules—is understandable but somewhat general; asking the agency to contact the neighbour or investigate the disturbance would make the requested outcome more concrete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised into a clear opening, an explanation of the impact, and a final request, so the reader can follow the progression easily. Linking phrases such as “On top of that” and “Therefore” help connect the points, and the paragraphs each have a clear purpose. The sequence from describing the noise to explaining its consequences and requesting action is logical. To make the cohesion more polished, use a slightly more formal transition than “On top of that,” and connect the neighbour’s repeated noise more directly to your request for agency intervention. The closing is appropriate, though a conventional sign-off such as “Yours faithfully” would better match the formal salutation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use enough vocabulary to explain the complaint clearly, including “extremely loud noises,” “constant noise,” “sleep is getting disturbed,” and “enforce stricter rules.” These choices communicate the main issue, and phrases such as “draw your attention to” show some awareness of formal letter style. However, several expressions are broad or slightly unnatural, which limits precision: “huge problem to my day to day life” and “noise level allowed” could be expressed more idiomatically. The description also says “noises” rather than identifying the video-game sound, so the vocabulary does not fully capture the specific situation. More precise collocations and a wider range of formal complaint language would strengthen the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “During the weekdays, I tend to sleep early at night in order to get a good night's sleep as I need to wake up quite early for my work.” The present perfect in “I have been hearing” and the past simple in “it began last month” are also used appropriately to describe an ongoing problem and its start. A few grammatical choices remain less natural: “since a few weeks now” does not use the time expression correctly, and “Hope you're doing well” omits the subject expected in a complete formal sentence. Review time expressions with “for” and “since,” and maintain complete, appropriately formal sentence structures.
