Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I recently rented the apartment from your agency and everything was going fine until last night. It has been couple of days that we are experiencing loud noise from the neighbors. The loud noise is bothering us because it is in the late night.

First of all, I tried to resolve this issue on my own. I went to their flat and explained my situation to them that I have small kids and they are unable to sleep because of this noise. I requested them that if they can lower the volume or play in the daytime but they directly ignored my request. My whole family is getting affected by this noise. My children are not able to sleep because of the same.

Then, I get to know that they rented it from your agency. I am urging you to resolve this as soon as possible otherwise I have to seek help from the police authorities as I cannot suffer daily because of this noise.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Best regards,

ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you indicate that the noise began “a couple of days” ago, explain that it prevents your children from sleeping and affects your family, and ask the agency to resolve the issue. The purpose is clear and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the timing is not fully clear because you also say everything was fine “until last night,” which seems to conflict with the problem having lasted several days. The requested action is also quite general: “resolve this” does not specify whether you want the agency to contact the neighbour or take another step. Clarifying the start date and making a precise request would develop the response more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The ideas follow a sensible overall sequence: you introduce the noise, describe your attempt to speak to the neighbour and its effect on your family, then ask the agency to intervene. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “First of all” and “Then” guide the reader through the account. This gives the letter a coherent structure. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the opening repeats the point that the noise is loud and occurs late at night. The relationship between “until last night” and “a couple of days” is also unclear, interrupting the progression slightly. More precise time references and smoother links between the problem, its impact and your request would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint clearly, including relevant terms such as “loud noise,” “lower the volume,” “ignored my request” and “seek help from the police authorities.” The reader can understand the situation and the seriousness of its effect. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “noise” and “because of this noise” recur, while “resolve this” does not identify the action you want. A few phrases are not natural collocations, such as “the late night” and “I have small kids.” Aim for more precise, formal expressions and vary the language used to describe the disturbance and its consequences. This would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentences, for example, “I went to their flat and explained my situation to them that I have small kids and they are unable to sleep because of this noise.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the errors do not prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, including “It has been couple of days” (which needs an article and a clearer tense construction), “I requested them that if they can lower the volume,” and the shift from past “I tried” to present “Then, I get to know.” There is also a tense mismatch in “I have to seek help” after “otherwise.” Review articles, reported requests and consistent tense choices, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
