Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to complain about the disturbing behaviour of my neighbours who also rent their flat through your agency. I came to this city last month only as I joined the RIMS for my M.B.B.S. My parents wanted me to stay alone rather than with classmates or friends to avoid any sort of distraction to my studies. Because of this reason, I rented the flat through your agency one month back. At that time, the tenants who were living in my neighbour flat were very cooperative, but they shifted somewhere else 2 weeks back. The new tenants who then occupied the same flat are law students, and they are in group of 5 friends who daily play video games till late night in a very loud volume.
As I already mentioned that I am a would be doctor, and chose the flat as a residence to avoid any kind of disturbance is getting disturbed from their careless and disturbing behaviour. I have to study till late night because of my long day classes, but due to their loud volume, it is getting very difficult to concentrate. Moreover, I am also a migraine patient so such type of noise pollution is affecting my health as well.
I really want you to take some action regarding this problem. You can either give them legal notice of some sort of fine for breaking rules and regulations of living peacefully in society or you can also tell them to leave the flat, and live somewhere else.
I am hoping you to take prompt action of this complaint so that such type of behaviour can be further avoided in socity.
Yours sincerely,
Pratibha Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You explain when the issue began by contrasting the previous cooperative tenants with the new occupants who arrived “2 weeks back”; you also describe the effects on your studies and migraine, and request action from the agency. These details make the complaint relevant and supported. The request for a fine or for the tenants to leave is clear, although it would be more effective to prioritise a proportionate first step, such as contacting them and enforcing quiet hours, before suggesting eviction. Overall, the task is covered well, with only some room to make the proposed resolution more measured and fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is organised in a sensible sequence: background and timing, the impact of the noise, then the action requested. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “At that time,” “Moreover,” and “I really want you” help the reader follow your points. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly “As I already mentioned that I am a would be doctor, and chose the flat…”; the relationship between your studies and the disturbance is difficult to follow in that sentence. The final paragraph also repeats the idea of preventing this behaviour. To strengthen cohesion, use clearer references and more direct transitions between the reason for renting and the effect of the noise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “disturbing behaviour,” “concentrate,” “migraine,” and “take some action.” These choices communicate the problem and its consequences clearly. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “noise pollution” and “rules and regulations,” though some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural: “in a very loud volume,” “a would be doctor,” and “fine for breaking rules” do not sound idiomatic in this context. “Socity” is also misspelled. Aim for precise collocations and a consistently formal register; for example, describe the games as being played “at a very high volume” and ask the agency to “address the disturbance” rather than using broad or awkward phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the reader can generally understand the complaint. Some sentences are controlled, such as “I have to study till late night because of my long day classes,” while others show errors in clause construction and verb patterns. For example, “As I already mentioned that I am a would be doctor…” combines structures incorrectly, and “I am hoping you to take prompt action” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also issues with articles and prepositions, as in “my neighbour flat” and “in group of 5 friends.” These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Practise building complex sentences around one clear main clause and check verb patterns such as “hope that you will” or “hope for.”
