Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Mam,
I am writing to express my concern regarding the excessive noise coming from my neighbour's flat, which is rented through your agency. the noise has become increasingly disturbing, particularly late at night, and is seriously affecting my daily routine.
The problem began approximately playing video games at a very high volume during the night. Initially, I assumed this was an occasional disturbance; however, it has now become a regular occurance. The noice, including loud game sound and shouting, frequently continues until midnight.
As a result, I have been experiencing difficulty sleeping, which leaves me feeling exhausted the following morning. This lack of sleep has also affected my contraction at work and reduces my overall productivity. Furthermore, I find it extremely frustrating that I cannot enjoy a peaceful emvironment in my own home.
I would appreciate it if you could contact the person in next door and explain the importance of respecting others right to a quiet living environment.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your prompt responce and a satisfactory resolution.
Yours faithfully,
Mustakim.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains an appropriate, formal purpose. You identify the issue as late-night gaming, explain its effects through poor sleep, exhaustion and reduced work productivity, and ask the agency to contact the neighbour. These details make the complaint relevant and clear. The main limitation is that the start of the problem is not actually explained: “The problem began approximately playing video games” is incomplete, so the reader does not learn when the disturbance first started. The requested action is also somewhat general; you could ask the agency to speak with the tenant and ensure the noise stops by a specific time. Developing these points more fully would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure: it introduces the complaint, describes the noise, explains its effects, and ends with a request and polite closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “As a result” and “Furthermore” help connect the consequences. The sequence is generally easy to follow, although the sentence beginning “The problem began approximately playing…” interrupts the flow because its meaning is incomplete. Some connections are also a little mechanical, with each paragraph presenting information in a straightforward list-like way. Make the timeline clearer and link the requested action directly to the effects—for example, explain that you are asking for intervention because the noise regularly continues until midnight.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a suitable range of complaint-related vocabulary, including “excessive noise,” “disturbing,” “affecting my daily routine,” and “overall productivity.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the problem and suit a formal letter. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes distract the reader: “occurrance,” “noice,” “contraction,” “emvironment,” and “responce” should be corrected. Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “loud game sound” and “the person in next door.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations such as “the sound of the game,” “my next-door neighbour,” and “concentration at work.” Proofreading carefully would help your vocabulary show its range more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “which is rented through your agency” and the conditional request “I would appreciate it if you could contact…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. “The problem began approximately playing video games” is incomplete and needs a time expression and a complete clause, such as “The problem began about a month ago, when my neighbour started playing…”. In “the noise has become,” the sentence should begin with a capital letter. The phrase “respecting others right” also needs a possessive form: “others’ right.” Check sentence completeness, capitalization and possessives while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
