Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my concern about an issue I have with my neighbour. Since I moved into the compound two months ago, I noticed a disturbing sound which often emanate from Mr Micheal's flat especially at night. Initially, I thought it was just a one-time situation, but after a while, I discovered he enjoys playing video game which makes very loud noise during odd hours.

I find this act very disturbing because the noise prevents me from having a good night rest, after a busy day at work. Sometimes, when I wake up in the midnight to pray or get important tasks done, I am always distracted by the sound.

I have tried to have a conversation with him about the issue, but he was dismissive. So, I would appreciate it if the agency could call his attention to this or put certain rules in place to ensure that every occupants keep sound volume at a reasonable level, particularly at night.

Thank you for help. I look forward to your feedback.

Yours faithfully,

Mariam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly addresses all three requested points. You establish when the problem began with “Since I moved into the compound two months ago,” explain its effect on your sleep and concentration, and make a specific request for the agency to speak to the neighbour or introduce rules. The account of your attempt to resolve the matter directly also supports your request and gives the letter a clear purpose. The ideas are relevant and generally extended, although the impact could be developed with a more concrete consequence, such as difficulty concentrating at work the following day. Overall, the response maintains a clear, appropriate position and covers the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, and then request action. Paragraphing supports this progression, while phrases such as “Initially,” “after a while,” and “So” help connect events and ideas. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some linking is slightly less natural: “Sometimes, when I wake up…” shifts from the noise disrupting sleep to waking for other reasons, which makes the connection to the complaint less direct. The final request also combines two possible actions in one long sentence. More precise transitions and a clearer separation of the preferred action from the alternative would make the progression even smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “express my concern,” “dismissive,” “distracted,” and “put certain rules in place.” These choices communicate the issue clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or unnatural: “disturbing sound” is less specific than “loud noise,” “odd hours” is vague, and “call his attention to this” does not sound natural in this context. There are also forms such as “video game” where the plural would be more appropriate. Greater precision and more natural collocations would strengthen the vocabulary while preserving your clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, including the time clause “Since I moved into the compound two months ago” and the conditional request “I would appreciate it if the agency could…”. Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following the complaint. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however: “a disturbing sound which often emanate” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “every occupants keep” has a number-agreement problem. “Thank you for help” also needs an article or possessive determiner. Review agreement, articles, and plural forms, and check long sentences for accurate construction to improve consistency.
