Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about the unbearable noises coming from my neighbouring apartment (S-22/F) accomodated through your agency since last week.

On 6th october, at fifteen past ten, I heard very high gaming noises coming from the room which adjoins my study room. Upon knocking their door, I got to know that my neighbour's son Mr. Virat was playing video game at a very high volume, but on requesting he lowered down the volume, and then raised it again after fifteen minutes. On that day, I managed somehow, but the same incident happened again on the next day. I raised the issue one more time upon which i was told that it would not happen again, but it continued since then.

As you know, I am pursuing a graduation degree in medical sciences, and wanted to stay in isolation to avoid any kind of distraction to my studies. Because of the long classes in the college during day time, I fixed my study hours from 8:00 p.m to 12:00 a.m, but unfortunately I am unable to concentrate due to the loud noises. Moreover, I am a migraine sufferer, and this type of noises are affecting my health as well.

I request you to please address this issue as soon as possible. Mr. Virat could either play during early evening to avoid this kind of late night disturbance to others or he could lower the volume so that it does not cross the walls.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You explain that the disturbance began on 6 October and continued after the neighbour had been asked to stop; you also describe its effects on your evening study and migraine. The request for action is clear, with practical suggestions about playing earlier or reducing the volume. These details make the response relevant and well supported. To strengthen it further, make the agency’s role more explicit: for example, ask it to contact the neighbour and ensure the problem is resolved, rather than leaving the main action as a suggestion about what Mr. Virat could do. This would make the requested outcome more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the opening states the complaint, the next paragraph gives the history, and the final paragraphs explain the impact and request action. Time markers such as “On 6th october,” “on the next day,” and “since then” help the reader follow events. However, some linking and reference are less smooth. The long account of the first two incidents could be divided or streamlined, and “this type of noises” makes the reference slightly awkward. The transition from your study schedule to your health effects could also be clearer. More controlled sentence division and a few precise links between cause and consequence would make the progression feel more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “unbearable,” “adjoins,” “distraction,” and “disturbance,” and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “study hours” and “migraine sufferer.” Some choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “gaming noises” is less precise than “noise from video games,” “lowered down the volume” is not idiomatic, and “accommodated through your agency” does not clearly express that you rent the flat through the agency. There are spelling and capitalization slips in “accomodated” and “october.” More natural collocations and careful proofreading would improve precision and formality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes both straightforward sentences and longer structures, including the explanation beginning “Because of the long classes…” and the conditional suggestion “Mr. Virat could either…”. Most meaning is understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “Upon knocking their door,” the possessive reference and sentence construction are faulty; “upon which i was told” also needs a capital “I” and clearer punctuation. The phrase “I am pursuing a graduation degree … and wanted to stay” shifts tense without a clear reason, while “I fixed my study hours” would be more naturally expressed with a present-tense form for a current routine. Review articles, verb tense consistency, and punctuation in longer sentences to make the range more controlled.
