Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to register a complaint against my neighbour for playing very loud video games during midnight .

The problem arised few weeks back when I was returning late back home from my workplace. I gave several warnings at that time .Not only this, I talked very patiently and tried to handle the situation in most calmest way as I could but all in vain.

However, the voice of the video game is too loud to handle. It has detrimental effect on my sleep cycle as my work is usually in the morning and I am unable to sleep properly during the nights. Additionally , they make shrill noises along with it while achieving every task in the game .

Therefore, I would like you to take appropriate steps in stop this issue. I request you to give them a notice after warning. I believe you will take desired solution for my problem.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three required points: it says the problem began “few weeks back,” explains that the noise disrupts sleep before morning work, and asks the agency to intervene by issuing a notice. The complaint is relevant and the requested action is understandable. The impact is the clearest part, while the start of the problem is only briefly described, and the request for action could be more specific—for example, asking the agency to contact the neighbour and require quiet during late-night hours. The opening “Dear Sir” also does not follow the supplied greeting, “Dear Sir or Madam.” More detail and a consistently appropriate formal tone would make the response more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The message follows a generally logical sequence: complaint and background, effects of the noise, then the requested action. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Additionally,” and “Therefore” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. “Not only this” does not clearly introduce a distinct point, and “they” in “Additionally, they make shrill noises” has an uncertain reference. The letter would progress more smoothly if each paragraph focused on one purpose and transitions were used only where they clarify the relationship between ideas. A clearer closing request would also strengthen the final stage.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for making a formal complaint, and some choices show an attempt to be precise, including “detrimental effect,” “register a complaint,” and “appropriate steps.” The meaning remains clear overall. However, several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the problem arised,” “returning late back home,” “in most calmest way,” and “take appropriate steps in stop this issue.” “Voice of the video game” is also less natural than “sound” or “noise from the game.” These choices limit the precision and naturalness of the vocabulary, despite the range attempted. Focus on common formal collocations and check word forms and spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and longer sentences, such as the sentence explaining that the noise affects sleep because work starts in the morning. The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “The problem arised few weeks back,” where the verb form and time expression need correction, and “I request you to give them a notice after warning,” which has an unclear grammatical relationship between the actions. The sentence beginning “I talked very patiently” also combines several clauses without consistently clear punctuation. There are some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, and punctuation, so greater control of these patterns is needed while retaining the attempt at complex sentences.
