Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to make a complain about loud noise coming from my neighbour's flat late at the night.

I am facing this issue since last month every night. This loud noise starts around 9 PM and continuously going on till mid-night in weekdays But on weekends it disturbs whole night.

Due to this noise, I am not able to sleep at night and that not only affects my health, but also affecting my performance at work. I am not able to concentrate on my work becuase of lack of sleep. Furthermore, sometimes noise is so loud and I am not able to talk over phone or enjoy programs television.

I would be greatful if you could advise him to lower down the volume or use headset while playing video games. It would be appreciated if you could also introduce some strict rules and regulations against noise pollution within the building.

Thank you for your considerration. I look forward to seeing your prompt action.

Your Faithfully,

Jagtar SIngh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly addresses all three points: you say the noise began “last month,” describe its effects on sleep, health and work, and request that the agency ask the neighbour to reduce the volume or use a headset. These details make your complaint purposeful and give the agency a clear response to consider. The impact is particularly well supported by examples such as being unable to concentrate at work or talk on the phone. To make the request more fully developed, specify a practical next step, such as contacting the neighbour directly or enforcing existing quiet hours, and clarify the timing of the weekend noise. Overall, the purpose and position remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a logical sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain when it occurs, describe its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Due to this noise” and “Furthermore” help connect the consequences. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some connections could be smoother: the sentence beginning “This loud noise starts” shifts abruptly from the start date to the daily schedule, and “But” after “weekdays” is not well integrated into the sentence. Use clearer transitions such as “On weekdays…” and “At weekends…” and keep related timing details together. The closing is recognisable, though a more conventional sign-off would make the letter feel more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “concentrate,” “performance,” “advise,” and “strict rules and regulations.” The reader can understand the problem and its effects, and your attempts to describe the consequences go beyond simply saying the noise is annoying. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “make a complain,” “lower down the volume,” and “noise pollution within the building.” There are also spelling errors in “becuase,” “greatful,” and “considerration,” which are noticeable even though they do not prevent understanding. Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast between weekday and weekend noise and the clause “not only affects my health, but also affecting my performance at work.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “I am facing this issue since last month” needs a tense that expresses a situation continuing from the past, while “starts … and continuously going on” has inconsistent verb forms. In “that not only affects … but also affecting,” the two parts of the construction should be grammatically parallel. There are also punctuation and capitalisation slips, such as the capitalised “But” mid-sentence. Review tense choice, parallel structures and sentence boundaries.
