Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about my neighbour for the very loud video games noise.

Last week, we both got accomodation from your agency. From the very next day, we are witnessing the loud video game noise from my neighbour. They plays everynight and makes very loud noise.

Most of the times, I considered going to bed early around 9-10 pm. As I need to wake up at 5 am to reach my job on time. However, the loud noise is making it difficult to sleep peacefully. Unfortunatly, we are sharing one single wall with each other as the partition of the unit, so it almost feel like they are playing in my bedroom.

That is why, I would like to suggest the agency to make a new law in the building regarding the noise level in the apartment after evening. I tried to tell my problem to them, however, they are still making the noise everyday. If you want more information, let me know.

Yours Faithfully,

Jigar Zala

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you say the noise began the day after the tenancy started, explain that it disrupts sleep before an early workday, and ask the agency to act. The details about going to bed around 9–10 pm and waking at 5 am make the effect on you clear. The request for a new building rule is relevant, but it is less practical and specific than asking the agency to contact the neighbour, remind them of quiet hours, or investigate the noise. You also mention that you have already spoken to the neighbour, which helps explain why you are contacting the agency. To develop the response further, state clearly what action you expect and by when.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: complaint, start of the problem, its effect on you, and a request for action. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “That is why” connect the impact to your request. Some links and references are less smooth: “Last week, we both got accommodation” is followed by “From the very next day,” but the relationship between these events could be expressed more directly. The final paragraph also moves from proposing a rule to mentioning your conversation with the neighbour without a clear transition. A more focused progression—problem, failed attempt to resolve it, specific agency action—would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate to communicate the complaint and its effects, with useful phrases such as “loud noise,” “sleep peacefully,” and “sharing one single wall.” However, several word choices and collocations sound unnatural or repetitive, including “video games noise,” “witnessing the loud video game noise,” and “make a new law.” These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. There are also spelling errors such as “accomodation” and “Unfortunatly.” Aim for more conventional expressions for a formal complaint, and vary repeated references to noise. For example, you could describe the sound as “late-night gaming noise” or “excessive noise,” and ask the agency to “enforce quiet hours” rather than create a law.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the meaning is generally clear. The sentence beginning “As I need to wake up at 5 am” gives a reason for the impact, while “I tried to tell my problem to them, however…” attempts to connect related ideas. Some grammatical errors remain: “They plays” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, “we are witnessing” shifts awkwardly from the past event to the present, and “it almost feel” lacks agreement. The opening “I am writing to complain about my neighbour for…” also uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. Work on consistent tense, agreement, and sentence boundaries; for instance, use “They play every night” and separate the final contrast into two sentences.
