Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have recently rented an apartment at Brampton through Borderscpes Agency. I am writing to raise a complaint regarding higher noise levels coming from next door during late nights.

I have been encountering this issue since the beginning of September, particularly, when the summer holidays began for school children. I hear loud screaming sounds both during day and night times. Especially during and after midnight I can clearly hear people playing online games which has been affecting both my mental and physical health.

I started noticing disturbances in my sleep due to the above-mentioned issue. Since I work as a Cyber Security Specialist at the Bank of Montreal, I have to get a good amount of sleep to avoid any crucial mistakes at work. It might even cost losing my job in the long run. Moreover, I have been feeling physically weak for the past couple weeks because of poor rest at night.

I understand that kids are enjoying their summer holidays but please do advice them to avoid making sounds that disturbs their neighbours. I kindly request you to also give them a warning when you get in contact with them.

Yours faithfully,

Vani Rajavelu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You identify when the problem began (“since the beginning of September”), explain its impact through disrupted sleep and physical weakness, and ask the agency to contact the neighbours and issue a warning. The work-related explanation adds relevant support to your complaint. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the source and pattern of the noise: the task specifies loud video games late at night, while “people playing online games” and daytime screaming broaden the complaint without explaining whether these are the same neighbours. You could also state a practical outcome, such as asking the agency to enforce quiet hours or confirm what action it will take.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe when it occurs, explain its effects, and finish with the action requested. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “Since” help connect related ideas. The reader can follow your purpose throughout. Some connections could be more precise, however. “Particularly, when the summer holidays began” interrupts the sentence, and the shift from noise “both during day and night times” to the focus on late-night gaming makes the pattern less clear. Keep the account centred on the late-night disturbance and use a direct transition from its timing to its effects. This would make the cohesion more flexible and less dependent on explicit linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of formal complaint vocabulary, including “raise a complaint,” “disturbances in my sleep,” and “physically weak.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the problem, and phrases such as “in the long run” add some flexibility. At times, however, word choice or collocation is awkward or imprecise: “higher noise levels” is less natural than “excessive noise,” and “making sounds that disturbs their neighbours” is not idiomatic. “Summer holidays began for school children” also introduces a detail that is not needed to describe the gaming. Aim for precise, natural phrases that identify the noise and the requested remedy. Check the agency name spelling as well, since “Borderscpes” may be a typo.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional “It might even cost losing my job” and the subordinate clause beginning “Since I work…”. Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, so the message remains easy to understand. A few errors persist: “please do advice them” should be “please advise them” or “please do advise them”; “sounds that disturbs” needs plural agreement (“sounds that disturb”); and “It might even cost losing my job” needs a different construction, such as “It might even cost me my job.” The punctuation around “particularly” is also awkward. Revising these patterns would strengthen accuracy while preserving your varied sentence structures.
